The Sisters of Charity -- A Legacy of Giving to the Community
Many Heartwooders know Sister Huguette Raby as a long time volunteer of the Community Laundry Co-op, one of Heartwood's member groups. She has also been a long time volunteer for Heartwood House, whether it's teaching Moe and others to speak French or working at our Unclaimed Items sales.
Sr. Huguette is always ready to help.
How do our Member Groups make a difference in the community?
Over 7,500 free books were given to children from birth to 12 years old by TwiceUponATime.
Community Laundry Cooperative members have done 4,000 loads of laundry this year.
Victoria's Quilts has sent out 2,800 quilts from Heartwood House to people in the midst of cancer treatment.
185 learners are matched with volunteer tutors in People, Words & Change (Adult Literacy) each year.
EatMoreSoup -- ALSO's Adult Literacy Social Enterprise will create delicious squash soup from 3,300 pounds of squash provided by the Ottawa Food Bank, to be given to those in need. Heartwood supports this partnership by providing its commercial kitchen for the production of the soup.
ELTOC -- English Language Tutoring for the Ottawa Community makes a difference in the lives of more than 200 newcomers each year for one-to-one ESL training with volunteer tutors.
ELTOC and CICAN -- Cooperation Integration Canada have just partnered to provide French as a Second Language training to newcomers.
Ottawa ACORN Income Tax Site and Benefits Clinics continue to boost financial literacy in low income communities. 811 people were assisted at ACORN this year.
One family's special Christmas gift
Each Christmas, the Jones family donates $5000 to a charity of their choice, and this year Heartwood House is the lucky recipient of their gift!
Their donation will be used to maximize services to the 17,000 people who visit Heartwood each year for support in achieving their goals.
Thank you to the Jones family for your kindness!
Merry Christmas!
