Dear members and organic supporters,

We recently had a successful BC Ag Day, coordinated by BCAC. Thanks to co-presidents Heather and Niklaus, along with other BCAC members, for meeting with MLAs and Ministers to discuss food security, water security and labour. We’re grateful for our membership in BCAC, as it allows us to collaborate, participate in opportunities like this, and advocate for the organic sector.

Here at Organic BC, meetings continue! Our Board of Directors annual retreat is happening in early November, and the Accreditation Board is soon holding their annual planning meeting.

As the season is coming to an end, we hope everyone is able to relax and take a moment for themselves.

Eva-Lena Lang, Executive Director

2022 BC Organic Conference Update

Join us in Chaos & Convergence from February 25 - 27!  Currently, we're moving ahead with an in-person conference at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, but will transition to an online format if needed.

In addition to a tantalizing new podcast series, the Conference Committee has planned a single-track program covering topics in seed saving, organics in regenerative agriculture, on-farm research, and forage cropping. This means there won’t be any difficult decisions about which concurrent session to attend!

Please contact Michelle at events@organicbc.org if you would like to:
  • Contribute something to the online auction (all funds raised support the conference). We're starting to gather item details (e.g. books, art, knitware, ceramics, services, giftcards...)
  • Help source ingredient donations for the Saturday Feast
Stay tuned for more details, to be posted to the website soon, and a full article in the Winter BC Organic Grower!

BC Ag Day

Ag Day, hosted by the BC Agriculture Council, took place earlier this week. This annual event gives agriculture sector representatives, including Organic BC, the chance to meet with many legislators and have our voices heard. These meetings are brief, but important for building connections and reminding government who we are, what we do, and what some of the sector-wide challenges are.

Our Co-Presidents, Heather Stretch and Niklaus Forstbauer, were busy over the past couple of days taking part in virtual meetings with MLAs and cabinet ministers. As well, our Executive Director, Eva-lena Lang, joined in for a meeting with Minister Popham to discuss the future of the organic sector, and Organic BC’s capacity to engage and support producers and collaborate with other organizations to address the challenges faced in agriculture today.

If you'd like to know more about Ag Day, be sure to check out BCAC's media release.

Upcoming Groundwater License Application Deadline

Don't forget: The deadline to apply for a groundwater license is March 1, 2022—that's less than six months away! If you divert and use groundwater for non-domestic purposes, including agriculture, you must obtain a water license.

Not only is this legally required, but there are some big (and expensive!) consequences if you miss the deadline.
