Derwentwater Independent Hostel
July Newsletter

June was a month of special sunsets, and we just wanted to share this spectacular view taken on 28th June.    There have been so many stunning skies this year, or maybe we've just spent more time standing outside the hostel staring into the distance and wondering what will happen next!!

Read on for news on more rooms and camping pitches now being bookable for the summer holidays, October half term availability, plans for November & December opening, and finally our Christmas & New Year plans.

It's So Good to be Back In Business

Derwentwater Independent Hostel reopened its doors on Friday 21st May, and in the first four weeks we've welcomed back 1,564 overnight visitors to the hostel.   That's 988 in the hostel, 363 on the camp ground and 213 in a camping pod.   And I'm happy to say that with so much space, we've managed to maintain our social distancing.
We'd been closed for six and a half months, which is a long time for a not for profit charity to survive.   But it's been so heartwarming to hear what it means to recent guests to have the hostel open again.   One family told us, that looking forward to half term at Derwentwater had kept them going through the last lockdown.
And that's just what we're here for and why we exist as a charity - to provide life enhancing experiences to all, and that's so valuable when so many people have had such a difficult year.

For those of you who haven't managed to get back to the Lakes yet, we look forward to seeing you soon.

More Rooms & Camping Pitches Bookable For The Summer Holidays

With the next step of lockdown easing just round the corner, we've released more rooms, making all of our rooms now bookable online at www.derwentwater.org.     So if you've not yet booked your summer trip to the Lakes, more private rooms and camping pitches are bookable now for most dates in July & August.     The camping pods have proved a huge success with only the odd night remaining in August, so if you're after a pod it may be easier to email us to ask which are the last few remaining nights.

7 Day a Week Opening In November & December - Self Catering Only

Looking ahead to the autumn and winter, we're aiming to keep the hostel open 7 days a week, to give you a chance for an end of season escape to the Lakes.   In previous years we've only opened weekends in November & December, but this year we're trying something different, and we've got some tempting prices on private rooms and camping pods, with rooms for couples from just £40 per night and camping pods for up to 4 from £50 per night, plus the usual choice of larger rooms for 3 to 8 people.
On these winter Sunday to Thursday nights we won't be serving any hostel evening meals or breakfasts, but the self catering kitchen will be available for you.
Those of you who have stayed here before in the winter will know what to expect - the hostel will be quiet, the fire will be roaring in the lounge and we'll have a little more time to stop and chat between our winter maintenance jobs.

Christmas 2021 Exclusive Hire

The hostel is available to book for exclusive hire (self catering) for a three or four night stay on the nights of 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th December, at just £895 per night, giving accommodation for up to 86 people, or if you have a smaller group of less than 40, we'd only charge you £595 per night.
Please email enquiries to reception@derwentwater.org and we'll send you our Exclusive Hire hostel information.

Twixmas & New Year 2021

As usual the hostel will be fully open from 28th December for the New Year Holiday week, enabling you to book private rooms and camping pods for a traditional post-Christmas Lakeland Break, with our usual hostel meal service running as normal.
All of our available accommodation for the week is now bookable at www.derwentwater.org or email any enquiries to reception@derwentwater.org

Self Catering Kitchen

A new huge fridge waiting to be unpacked.
The self catering kitchen continues to be a popular asset to the hostel, and we're pleased to report that our plan to offer the kitchen with social distancing restrictions has largely worked.
In response to a number of requests we've bought another huge fridge to try and make sure everyone has space for their groceries.
As a reminder, until we're told otherwise by Boris, we're running with the following limitations in the self catering kitchen:
  • A maximum of two people will be able to use the cooking area at any one time.
  • We'll ask you to cook alone for your household, in order to allow space for someone else to cook.
  • You'll be able to use the tables in the self catering kitchen in your household groups, although we've reduced the number of tables.
  • We'll keep the kitchen well ventilated with the windows open and the extraction on at all time.
  • The kitchen will be deep cleaned daily, and there will be additional cleaning and sanitisation throughout the day.
We expect the kitchen to be in high demand, so recommend cooking outside of the expected peak times, to avoid disappointment and frustration.

Autumn & Winter Focus on Camping Pods

Our new four person camping pods have been a great success, and have proved hugely popular.     We're now glad that we paid the extra for fully insulated and heated pods, which make them suitable for year round use.   With underfloor heating and a small electric panel heater we expect the pods to be super cosy in the winter months.

All three of our camping pods are now bookable for all available nights up to and including 2nd January 2022, so grab one now, either for a November or December bargain mid week break or for the popular New Year Holiday week.
And don't forget, dogs are welcome in the pods.
