"Evergreen," LEO

LEO is an Australian singer-songwriter who I learned about when she reached out on Twitter, having noticed a shared interest in the music of Gillian Welch. You can certainly hear shades of Welch in LEO's quietly beautiful voice and the high lonesome production on her 2020 eponymous EP. If you liked The Long Farewells' "Only the Stars," you'll dig LEO as well.

"Hrishikesh Hirway," Design Matters

I've mentioned Song Exploder, one of my favorite podcasts ever, in this newsletter before; in this interview Song Exploder's creator talks about how he wound up with what is basically my dream job: interviewing musicians about the process behind how they created some of their best work.

"Willie Nelson Understands" - Amanda Petrusich, The New Yorker

By now most folks know the story of Willie Nelson -- how one of the most successful singers and songwriters in country music (hell, in all music) didn't find success until his late 30s, then blossomed into the icon of outlaw country we know today in a cloud of pot, prison, and narrowly-averted-penury. Last year he and his sister (and piano player) Bobbie released a co-authored book about their lives together. Amanda Petrusich interviewed him about all of the above for this New Yorker article.
