Happy New Year 2023!

As we start this new year, we bring to you this special edition of 2022 which we have curated to share and highlight some key moments from the Fifteenth Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 15) held from 7-19 December in Montreal, Canada.

We have much to celebrate, especially the adoption of the stand-alone target on gender equality in the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework, and of the post-2020 Gender Plan of Action.

Women made history this CBD COP 15, with the CBD now being the first Rio Convention to have a strong, visible and set agenda to address gender equality and women’s rights as it adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (23 Targets), with a stand-alone target on gender equality as Target 23. It also mentions women and girls in Target 22, in addition to the post-2020 Gender Plan of Action. The CBD is also the first multilateral environmental agreement to have a Gender Plan of Action, and in the preamble text recognizes the vital role that women play in conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
