New Music Minister
by Pastor Allison

I am happy to announce that we will have a new Music Minister at St. John's beginning on Sunday, June 19th!  His name is Luke Duroc-Danner, and he introduces himself in the letter below.  The Search Team, made up of Craig Gonder (chair), Richard Rusz, Jan Wendel, Tina Ziegler, and Pastor Allison, were very impressed with Luke's background as well as his musicianship, his passion for including volunteer musicians, and his desire for music to continue to enhance the worship life of our congregation.  Many thanks to the Search Team for their diligent work on behalf of our congregation!  Check out Luke's letter below:

To the St. John’s Community,

My name is Luke Duroc-Danner and I am an organist, conductor, and singer. Originally from Houston, I first came to the city when I attended the University of Chicago in Hyde Park. I received my B.A. in Music in 2016. Since then, I’ve been working with Dr. Phillip Kloeckner, the organist at First United Methodist Church downtown. In 2018, I moved to Seattle to earn my Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. While I had sung with church choirs fairly regularly since high school, I took my first church job as the choir director at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, Washington. The end of my masters program was somewhat derailed - like so many things were - in March of 2020, but I graduated in June and moved back to the Chicago area that summer. Shortly afterwards, I began working as the organist and choir director at Concordia Lutheran Church. Since moving back to Chicago, I have also gotten engaged, began singing with the Chicago Choral Artists, started conducting Crescendo Choir in Arlington Heights, and have taken up medieval longsword as a new hobby. I also have a rescue cat, and in my spare time, I enjoy cooking, watching history documentaries, and hiking.

I’m very excited to step into a new position as the Music Director for St. John’s. I’m very much looking forward to working with both the rest of the leadership team and the congregation to build a music ministry that serves the spiritual needs of the congregation, engages the community, and uplifts the songs of praise and prayers to God. I strongly believe that music communicates in a unique way that impacts people more than words. Music can reinforce all the activities of the church - from enriching the service to building bridges with the community. I’m excited by the many possibilities available at St. Johns, and I look forward to continuing to grow in service.

Sincerely,
Luke Duroc-Danner
