Holy Week at St. John's
By Pastor Allison

The services of Holy Week tell a story that is both 2,000 years old and also as current as this very moment.  We live in a world racked with political conflict, violence, betrayal, heartbreak, and loss, and these are the very themes of Holy Week.  In the midst of these themes, we also find moments of joy:  peasants who shout "Hosanna!" in the street, friends who gather around a table for good food, and women who discover that the impossible has taken place.  The ups and downs of this week capture the ups and downs of our lives and give shape to our spiritual journey as Christians.  May you may find space in these services to hold and give voice to all of who you are, no matter where you are on your journey.

All services are offered in person and on Zoom unless otherwise indicated.

Palm Sunday, April 10, 9:30 am
In his joyful and hope-filled procession into Jerusalem, Jesus boldly declares that the forces of this world will not stop the coming of God's kingdom.  Join us this Sunday for a festive palm procession and worship service led by Bishop Yehiel Curry.

Maundy Thursday, April 14, 7 pm
This year's Maundy Thursday service will focus on the institution of the sacrament of Holy Communion.  The service will include a time for individual absolution/healing blessing/laying on of hands, preaching by Student Pastor Derek, Holy Communion, and the stripping of the altar in preparation for Good Friday.

Good Friday, April 15, 7 pm
On Good Friday, we remember the passion and death of Christ.  This tenebrae service will begin with lights on and will include the progressive extinguishing of candles and turning out of lights until the services concludes in near-darkness.  The passion narrative will be portrayed with different leaders reading each character, and music and prayers will be interspersed throughout.  Join us for this moving, soulful service.

Intergenerational Easter Vigil, Saturday, April 16, 5 pm
(in-person only)
Our Children, Youth, and Family Ministries Team will host this unique, interactive worship experience in the Fellowship Hall.  People of all ages are encouraged to participate!

Easter Sunday, April 17, 9:30 am
Having mourned the suffering of the world and died with Christ, we rise with him on Easter morning.  This joyful service features string quartet, preaching by Pastor Allison, and Holy Communion.  Children's Church will be offered during the service as well as an Easter Egg Hunt after worship.  Plan to stay for Easter Coffee Hour with sparkling juice and delicious snacks!

Welcome, Bishop Yehiel Curry!
We are thrilled to welcome Bishop Yehiel Curry (he/him) to preach and preside this Sunday.  Bishop Curry was elected June 8, 2019, to serve a six-year term as bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).  From 2013-2019, Bishop Curry served as pastor of Shekinah Chapel Lutheran Church, where he also served as mission developer from 2007 to 2012.  Bishop Curry received a Bachelor of Arts from Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois in 1995, and a Master of Divinity from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 2013.  He and his wife, LaShonda, are the parents of three daughters.
First Communion/Thanksgiving for Communion Classes
Student Pastor Derek will be leading a three-week First Communion/Thanksgiving for Communion class with children and youth beginning after Easter. The class will meet during Children’s Church time on April 24th, May 1st, and May 8th, in person only. We will celebrate and receive first communion on May 15th during the 9:30 am service. All children are welcome and encouraged to participate regardless of whether they've received communion previously. If you'd like to volunteer to assist or have questions, please email

Visitors for Sarah
Sarah Rink, a regular participant at the Saturday service and now a participant in Sunday morning services, is looking for folks who would be willing to visit her in her home (1900 Wilmette Ave. #2F).  She is experiencing chronic pain, and having visitors would be a great blessing in her life.  She is open to hosting visitors at 4 pm or 5 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.  Sarah is fully vaccinated and happy to wear a mask if that is preferred.  Please give her a call at 847-251-2758 to let her know when you can stop by!
