Welcome to Advent
An Invitation from the Creators of our Advent Worship Materials

The stories, scriptures, and traditions of the Christmas season have been passed down to us throughout the generations. Many of us enter this season with a swell of memories and emotions as vast as the cultural and religious rituals this holiday holds. Like a tapestry woven throughout time, the Christmas story weaves us in—to remember how God has shown up in the past, to continue the work of collective liberation, to behold the presence of God in flesh and bone.

During Advent this year, we invite you to take a closer look at how the Christmas story unfolds. We encourage you to pay attention to each of the characters in these familiar narratives and ask: What did each person pass on or contribute? How did they either participate in God’s liberation and love—or try to thwart God’s justice? What can we learn from them and what is our role now? What will we pass on to the next generation?

Our Advent theme for this year, "From Generation to Generation," reminds us of the ways our lives, histories, actions, and stories are interconnected and woven together. The work of God is always unfolding—in and through us. This Advent, may you remember that you belong—to a story etched into the wrinkles of time, to generations that have come before and will come after, to a love that won’t let you go.

Artfully yours,
The Sanctified Art Creative Team (Rev. Lisle Gwynn Garrity, Rev. Sarah (Are) Speed, Hannah Garrity, Rev. Lauren Wright Pittman, Rev. Anna Strickland)

St. John’s Lutheran Church

This year, St. John’s is collaborating with First Presbyterian Church of Wilmette and St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church to host a Longest Night Gathering, featuring music and liturgy by The Many, a diverse, inclusive, music and spoken word collective.  This creative worship service offers an opportunity for the community to come together, share stories, lament our losses from the past year, and kindle hope.

2023 Commitment Cards
Thanks to all who have submitted their 2023 commitment cards!  So far, we have received 36 cards, with 67% of these households indicating an increase in generosity and 2 of these households being brand new givers.  We are also happy to report that 3 households have indicated growth of more than 25% over their current giving level.  Thank you so much!  Our expected increase next year from those who have submitted cards is $219 per week, which is 31% of the way to our goal of $700 per week.  If you have not yet submitted your card, please do so by postal mail, by placing it in the offering plate, or by completing it online.  Remember, we have an anonymous donor who has promised to donate an additional $500 for every card received above 50.  We need 14 more cards to get to 50, and then we can begin earning those bonus funds!

Advent Buffet
To help you on your Advent journey, a buffet of Advent supplies has been prepared for you in the gathering space by the Fellowship Hall.  You will find Advent calendars, a devotional, and an Advent study. Also available are Advent wreath coloring sheets with extra votives and candles if you need them. Take some time to look over buffet and help yourselves to the items you would like to use.

Intergenerational Coffee Hour Crafts
In keeping with our Advent theme, “From Generation to Generation,” there will be intergenerational crafts available during coffee hour each Sunday in Advent, beginning Dec. 4. Our young people are encouraged to join with our older members to create these crafts together. Share stories and get to know each other better!

Poinsettia Orders
Poinsettias may be ordered in memory of a loved one, in celebration of an occasion or a person, or in thanksgiving for the abundance of God’s blessings. These beautiful plants will decorate the sanctuary during the holiday season for all to enjoy, and they may be taken home by their donors following the service on Sunday, January 8.  Please complete the insert in today’s bulletin and place it in the offering plate with your payment, or you may pay online using the “Poinsettias” category.  The cost of each poinsettia is $13, and the deadline for ordering is Sunday, Dec. 11.

Holy Family Christmas Giving Tree
Holy Family is again asking if we would participate in their gift program for the children. They are asking for $25 gift cards to Target. The cards have already been purchased, and if you are interested in supporting the students in this manner, please send a check to church for $25 or multiples of $25. Make the checks payable to St. John’s Lutheran Church and in the memo please write “HFM Gift”.  You may also buy the cards online using the “Holy Family School Gift Cards” category for $26 (this includes a $1 processing charge). Deadline for the collection is Dec. 11. Our goal this year is 24 cards. Although not as much fun as picking out a gift for one of our wonderful and hard-working HFM students, this is the safest way to still say we love you to the children in their care. The Holy Family Christmas Giving Tree program has been a part of St John's for many years, and we don't want to miss blessing the boys and girls of Holy Family at this joyous holiday season. Thank you so much.
