Welcome to Lent
by Pastor Allison
Is not this the fast I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?
- Isaiah 58:6
Our observance of Lent begins this evening with our Ash Wednesday service in the sanctuary (or on Zoom) at 7 pm. Given reduced COVID positivity rates, we will resume congregational singing for all hymns. Masks are still required, and respirator masks (KN95, N95, KF94) are strongly encouraged. KF94s are available at church for those who would like one. If you are unable to attend in person, you may pick up ashes from Jan in the church office any time today after 9:30 am.
Our theme for Lent this year will be, "The Fast I Choose: Confronting White Supremacy Culture." As we know, racism is embedded in the structures of our community, and as Christians, we are called to dismantle racist systems and become actively anti-racist. In order to do this, we must first recognize the cultural norms that allow racism to thrive. Racial justice advocate and educator Dr. Tema Okun has identified 14 of these cultural norms, which she calls "Characteristics of White Supremacy Culture." Each Sunday during Lent, we will look at two of these characteristics, reflecting on how they are active in our lives and in our congregation. Together, we will confess our participation in cultural practices that support racism, and we will resolve to embrace alternative practices and patterns.
