Greetings,
Per the announcement of our first-ever virtual Ringin' in an Appalachian New Year, we are looking forward to celebrating the New Year (virtually) much like we typically celebrate in Price Hill when we are able to gather in-person. One of the many activities at this event is our My Appalachain Memory Word Quilt hosted by Barb Childers. Take a look back at previous years' submissions, learn how to submit an entry this year, and register for the event in the blog post and in this newsletter. Tune in to the event on Sunday, January 17 from 1-3 PM via Zoom to hear one of your Appalachian Memories read during the event hosted by Omope Carter Daboiku. Registration required.
Get the full scoop and important links in this newsletter in addition to the blog post. Let us know you're coming by registering (for free) in advance and responding to our Facebook event.
Sincerely,
UACC

Are you ready for a new year? Although 2020 presented its many challenges, The Urban Appalachian Community has a lot to celebrate as we enter 2021! Join the Urban Appalachian Community Coalition for our first-ever VIRTUAL "Ringin' In an Appalachian New Year" event on Sunday, January 17 from 1-3 PM via Zoom (REGISTER FOR FREE HERE IN ADVANCE).
While we will miss the opportunity to gather face-to-face, sharing food, and swapping stories, we are working together to make the virtual celebration as warm and down home as we can. Luckily many of our bands are family bands, which means they can stay safe in their homes and still perform for us in ours. Our virtual Ringin' In an Appalachian New Year will include old-time & bluegrass music by Russ & Barb Childers, Pineridge Partners, Roscoe Morgan, Intergenerational Fiddle Cult, Carter Bridge Duo, and Tellico Family Band. And yes, storyteller Omope Carter Daboiku will be back to emcee the festivities.
We couldn’t figure out how to do a potluck online, but how about a recipe swap!? Click HERE to share your favorite potluck or other recipes, and we’ll share these virtually during the program in a Zoom breakout room where we can show the recipes and tell the stories behind them. Cooking demonstrations are most welcome during this time. Eating demonstrations too!
Since we are keeping our onscreen event shorter than our regular live event, we’ll have less time for music in what we are calling the “main stage,” so we will have a separate breakout room for an Open Mic of poetry, stories, and music hosted by Sherry Cook Stanforth. Anybody who wants to share can join that “room” and share a short set (four minutes or less). And since we can’t sit around the tables and talk, we’ll have yet another breakout rooms for gabbing. We’re calling it the "Smoking"/Hangout Room, but we promise it will be smoke-free!
What is this room thing we keep talking about? Don’t worry, we’ll show you when you sign in!
And one more thing not to worry about—Barb Childers is still leading our annual Appalachian Memories Word Quilt. You can share your story in advance HERE or type into the Chat in Zoom (we’ll tell you how to use Chat). We’ll all get to hear Omope share some of these stories during the event.
As long time organizer Nancy Laird says, “Ringin’ in an Appalachian New Year is all about respecting old traditions and creating new ones! Each year is a little different, based on who shows up. But one thing is for sure, by the time it’s over we’re all family.”
So join us for both old and new traditions on Sunday, January 17, 2021, 1-3 pm for Ringin’ In an Appalachian New Year!
