Hello <<First Name>>!
We are less than a month from Santa Nana's Holiday University! We hope you are as excited as we are to come together in an environment where we learn, share, encourage, and connect with each other. We have added more details to the schedule and have some important updates.

Here's what to look for in this message - look for the RED notes:
  1. A Survey to give us more insights about your expectations, and giving permission to add your contact information to the Class Roster
  2. Updates on what to send ahead
  3. Updates on what to bring with you
  4. Heads up about a meal survey coming soon
  5. Updates to the schedule that you can find on the SNHU website
First, please take a quick survey. Click HERE to answer a few questions about your expectations and some of your thoughts as a performer. We will share your feedback at the workshop. We also ask for your permission to share your contact information to create the Class Roster. Second, we are thrilled that we have TWO special presenters. Santa Shannon Lee Settles will discuss photography, and we will also be honored with a representative from The Arc to discuss visits with special needs children.

Third, we will be supporting the East Durham Children's Initiative. Read below for what you can bring to fill a basket of art supplies.

What to Send Ahead (UPDATED)

If you have any of the following, please send them so we can include examples in our discussions. One of our goals with SNHU is to share and get feedback on what we are currently doing or planning to do, sharing best practices, and learning from each other. We realize each of us is at a different stage of professional development, so please do not worry if you have not yet created them.
  • New! PERMISSION to share your name, character name, email, phone, city, and state with your fellow attendees. We want to include a Class Roster in your booklet so you can stay connected with each other after the workshop. We need your written permission to share. You can reply via the Survey mentioned above, reply to this email or send a note to with a Yes or No to share.
  • Photo(s) of you in character—it can be a head shot, full shot, in casual wear, business wear, formal wear, etc. We want to build in a showcase of your different looks for different venues. You can also send some photos you are not that happy with and are willing to share as an example of a lesson learned, like the shiny face, the bad angle, the awkward pose, etc.
  • Business Card—scan your current business card for a show and tell of how you advertise and market yourself.
  • Resume/Bio—if you have one, send a copy we can share as an example, and we can also give you some feedback.
  • Links—to your character Facebook page(s) and website.
 Send what you have to

What to Bring with You (UPDATED)

  • New! Art Supplies. The selected community service project will support the East Durham Children's Initiative (EDCI) to help stock the art supplies for the children they serve. They have provided a list of supplies that will help. We will stuff a basket with these supplies to present to EDCI. Here is a note directly from them.
    • EDCI STEAM Summer Camp is a 5-week, full-day academic summer camp for students in rising 3rd-5th grade (approx. ages 8-10). East Durham Children's Initiative (EDCI) works with predominantly low-resource families in East Durham to support the academic success of students on their journey from cradle to college or career. Our STEAM Summer Camp is an essential part of that journey for many students, as it has been shown to not only prevent summer learning loss, but produce academic gains in just a few short weeks. We focus on literacy and math, as well as featuring a daily STEAM (STEM + Arts) activity block during which students engage in hands-on, project based learning. STEAM Summer Camp begins this year on June 24, and continues through August 1.

We will be able to use your donations of basic art and school supplies to support our students during the academic and STEAM portions of their days at camp. I understand that you will be collecting donations during Santa Nana's Holiday University from June 21-23, which is great timing with the start of camp.

Following is a basic wish list of art and school supplies that we need for our students. We will accept donations of any new and age-appropriate supplies, even if they are not listed here.
    • Markers, crayons, colored pencils
    • Kids scissors
    • Glue sticks or white/clear school glue
    • #2 pencils (not mechanical)
    • Erasers
    • Composition books, lined notebooks, sketchbooks
    • Kid-safe paints and paintbrushes
    • Posterboard
    • Coloring books (ages 8+, including appropriate "adult coloring books," for example: linklink)
  • New! Cookie Recipe. The team has suggested a Christmas Cookie Recipe Exchange, sharing your favorite treat with your fellow attendees. Bring 20 copies to share, and you'll leave with a new collection of recipes of proven favorites!
  • New! Your Swim Suit (or shorts/top). La Quinta has a lovely pool, After class, we can enjoy time at the pool, even if you just dip your toes in the water.
  • An Accessory—bring your favorite (travel-worthy) accessory to show your classmates the type of accessories you add to your attire that help you stand out from the crowd.
  • Business Cards—bring a few extra business cards to exchange with your classmates to build your networking directory.

Dress Code

  • Casual and comfortable for class time.
  • Photo-worthy clothing for your photo shoot. You do not need to bring your full regalia unless you want to wear it for your photo shoot.
  • Graduation—we would love to see everyone wear a red top and black pants/skirt for our group graduation photo, which we will take Sunday. Not required, but we like the idea of carrying on the theme that Santa Nana started with first class in 2016, and then for the Inaugural session in 2018. We all look fabulous, do we not?!

Bringing a Guest?

If your spouse or partner plans to come to Durham but doesn’t plan to attend class, let us know if you want to include him/her with meals. We can send a separate invoice for the Saturday lunch and Sunday graduation celebration ($15 each). Guests are welcome to join us at the group dinner Saturday night (separate checks). Write to us at
New! Staying through Monday?

If you are staying through Sunday night and have Monday free, let us know if you are interested in doing something in town. From a tour of Durham, to visiting Duke University's museum, or visiting the local shops, we may have time to do something fun Monday morning before traveling home.

Thank you, and we'll send more updates as needed.
