The Role of Myofunctional Therapy in the Dental Field
Course Description: Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are disturbances of muscle function of the orofacial complex. Civilization and the developing world have contributed to the increase of OMDs because of the decline in breastfeeding, nasal breathing, and hard food chewing.
Dental hygienists have practiced myofunctional therapy, also known as orofacial myology, for over thirty years in the United States. Our intense training in head and neck anatomy provides us with a solid foundation for entering this field.
During this course you will get a glimpse of why dental hygienists are at the forefront of this fast-developing profession. You will learn signs and symptoms of myofunctional disorders, the fundamentals of tongue-tie, and sleep disordered breathing. This course will also guide you to become an important part of the interdisciplinary approach to treating patients.
