Toska's Tips: Skincare Trends

When it comes to skin care, it seems like there's always a new trend. From influencers sharing their regimens to DIY hacks to expert breakdowns, there’s something for everyone. But these fads may not help your skin, or maybe even damage it.

Everyone’s skin is different, so the most important thing you can do is consult with a professional to determine what is the best for your skin. What works for one person may not work for you, even if you have the same skin concerns. Below are five skin care trends you’re better off avoiding.

#5 - DIY Products

The idea of making homemade masks, serums, or moisturizers is tempting, but these mixtures usually do more harm than good and can sometimes even cause chemical burns. Even something as simple as a sugar scrub can irritate and over-exfoliate sensitive skin, so it's important to consult with experts before doing something that can potentially harm your skin.

#4 Peel Off Masks

It's easy to understand why many of us like of peel-off masks. After using one, it can feel like you've removed any and all impurities from your skin, but this can actually cause a lot of damage to your skin. Oftentimes these masks are abrasive and work by removing the outer layer of the skin, leading to redness and irritation that can particularly effect sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.

There are better ways to exfoliate your skin without damaging it, such as with a toner like Lotion P50 or with a purifying masque such as Masque Vivant.

#3 Deodorant as Toner

It may seem ridiculous, but some people on social media suggest putting deodorant on your face before you apply makeup to create a matte effect. Honestly, it doesn’t even make sense, because deodorant doesn’t stop you from sweating, it just stops you from stinking when you sweat. Antiperspirant does stop you from sweating, but please don’t put it on your face. It isn’t formulated for your face and could cause some serious breakouts and irritation.

If you would like to add something to your routine that will help makeup settle in the way you like, look into Biologique Recherche's finishing serums.

#2 DIY Pore Vacuuming

Pore vacuums are small handheld devices that use gentle suction to clear away oil, dead skin cells, and debris. They are generally used by professionals, although many people have taken to trying them out by themselves. Using at-home pore vacuums when you aren’t trained or experienced can cause the skin to bruise, and you can even get a skin condition called telangiectasias, which refers to small broken blood vessels in the skin.

To cleanse your pores, consider booking a Deep Cleansing treatment, which helps your skin feel fresh and clean without the risk of damage.

#1 Using Internet Advice

Anyone can claim to be an expert in skin care without any training, and that can spell disaster for your skin. Of course, the best thing to do is to consult a professional, as they have had years of training and experience in this field and will give sound advice to help you with your skin concerns.
