Welcome to In an Auscape! What's an auscape? It's a word my friend Katie came up with that means "The sensation of a second stretching into a minute, a mile, or a year." Is that fresh or what? This newsletter is where I'll describe my (bi)weekly minutes, miles, and years. Thanks for coming along for the ride.
What I'm About
Well, it happened—I got my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine this week. I feel relieved and lucky and hopeful that this is the beginning of a huge flood of vaccines all around, for everyone. Erica makes a muscle and holds her vaccine cardWhy was I able to get the vaccine? Here's my best guess: I read a daily civics newsletter that advised readers to update their online form, adding to our online profiles all kinds of individual details that help classify us into phased groups.

And secondly, my BMI is likely (honestly, I have no idea, haven't stepped on a scale in many years) between 25-29%. If you don't know about BMI and why it's a load of crap, you can start here. Basically, it was created by a white man as a population indicator, and never meant to be an individual measure of health.

Who was it that brought BMI to the masses? None other than Ancel Keys, who I studied in detail when I was writing an essay about the Minnesota Starvation Experiment (not for the feint of heart, also sorry but my essay is better than this dumb article and nobody published it). This guy loved experimenting on people for "science" and eventually introduced the K ration that was used to feed people in the military for many years.

Ultimately, I'm glad to be vaccinated. But I think there are many, many people who probably should have been prioritized ahead of me: a healthy, young(ish) person who can work from home. (And does, exclusively, work from home!) I'm looking forward to a time where instead of racing for scarce resources, we have more than enough of everything that we need.
Who I Followed
Graphic of Alabama with Amazon smile upside down and words "BamazonUnion"
"Just now, @POTUS shared his support for our fight! He is with us, and supports our fight for a union at @Amazon!" 2/28
WV Delegate Danielle Walker
"If you can shout in the streets, can you use your voice and presence in the classrooms, board offices, churches, and dinner tables?" 3/10
Vaccinate Yourself (Sing it in Bob Marley Voice)
Do you know what forms to fill out, what questions to answer, who to call? It's different in every state, because of course it is, but making sure your information is up to date is crucial to getting that little fixer in your arm.

Are you already vaccinated? How was your experience? Have you helped someone else get their shot? Did you have to refresh one website a thousand times? I'm so curious about other folks' experiences, so please share! And y'all! (Consensual) Hugs. Are. Coming!
Pleasure Fix
It was our third anniversary this week, which, I mean, wow, time is just unbelievable, right? We celebrated with cards and (small) gifts and tulips and champagne and an amazing cheese board and homemade mussels and lots of television.
As you read this: We're getting ready to welcome two teens for their spring break: buying snacks, cleaning in anticipation of the whirlwind, and learning the latest slang.
