March Madness!

Instead of a March Madness competition this year, let's come together in unity to make progress in fighting food insecurity on EMU's campus!

This means not only stocking the pantry with food but making sure EMU students know about and can access the pantry.

Sharing food brings us together, even when we are apart. Sharing builds our community and sustains us - mind, body and soul.

Ways you can help:
  • Share information about Swoop's Pantry with students by emailing students info about Swoop's, sharing a flyer, or making a post via social media! Please email us at and our team will send you a copy of the current flyer.
  • Make cash donations to the EMU Foundation so that Swoop's can purchase nutritious food, personal hygiene and household items (please indicate in the comments which department or building you represent)
  • Donate items by shopping & dropping items to the pantry or by using the Amazon Wish List (please also indicate in the order what building or department you represent)

Swoop's will still be tracking donations by building/department and reporting out the results in April!
Meet our new intern Roya!
Roya is BSW student who enjoys making lots of unique music playlists and the company of her cats. She loves to organize and research and is an avid learner, taking on many tasks and projects from the moment she started her internship. She has already made an impact on Swoop's services by helping to formulate and evaluate a student survey we recently conducted with shopper's about their barriers to accessing Swoop's. Check out the results below!
*Student Survey Results*
Barriers to accessing Swoop's Pantry

  • 38.8% of students report feeling nervous or anxious about accessing Swoop's Pantry
    • Of these students, 38% feel there is a stigma about using a food pantry
    • 58.9% said they're nervous because they feel "other students need the food more than them"
  • 24% of students state that location was an obstacle to them getting food
    • Of these, 25.6% don't have a vehicle
    • Over 20% report difficulty walking to get groceries during the winter
    • 10.9% can't afford to ride the bus, and 5.4% don't live near a bus line
Swoop's is working to disrupt the stigma and barriers around accessing the pantry as well as to creatively overcome transportation barriers. As of March 1st Swoop's will eliminate the 2x per month shopping limitation and allow students to access the pantry as needed

Swoop's is also working to acquire grocery trolley's and sturdier grocery bags for students who carry heavy groceries on foot across campus (these are currently available for purchase on our Amazon Wishlist!)

The EMU Service Center announced last week that students can receive a free 30 day AAATA bus pass and have it mailed to their place of residence!
