Annette and David Johnson

By Alexander Scott and Providence Cantalamisa, BSW Interns

Annette Johnson, who attended EMU and graduated with a Masters degree in 1994 and her husband David have been longtime supporters of Swoop’s Food Pantry. Since graduation, Annette has stayed very close with EMU. With the goal of helping students, the Johnsons looked at different ways to support EMU students and felt that by working with Swoop’s they might reach as many students as possible. This led to forming the John and Angie Sabo Swoop's Food Pantry endowment.

They chose to name the endowment after Annette’s parents to honor that they lived their lives doing whatever they could to help those who were  hungry. Her parents often said "No one should ever go hungry, ever". The Johnson’s said, "we were so committed to the success of the pantry we chose to create an endowment so the principal may grow over time yet allow the use of the annual investment income for operations and to grow the program." Over time, the endowment has grown along with the pantry and will continue to do so.  Swoop's Food Pantry thanks Annette and  David for all they have done to help students by creating a sustainable endowment and sharing information about the pantry with others.

Swoop's Article of the Month!

Colleges all around the United States are working  to address food insecurity. One of the great things about most college campuses is that there are no qualifications other than being a student to use a campus pantry . At Swoop's, the mission is to provide food for everyone while also working to end the stigma of being a student who needs support. Check out this US News article  to learn about other ways that colleges, including EMU, are addressing issues related to making sure students have  access to food.
