NAB in the community

Highlights of the activities our National Advisory Board (NAB) and Impact Investing Network (IIN) team have been involved in recently.

NAB signs off business plan - rolls up sleeves to put plan into action

In our last update we shared the roles the NAB can play to grow the impact investing sector:

We’ve taken these roles and signed off our business plan to put activities into action.

An ecosystem is only as healthy as the diversity and activity of its members. The NAB sees our primary role as enabling the community of impact investing practitioners.

Throughout this year, we’ll be getting in contact to get you involved with our activities. Such as getting together for community events, shining the spotlight on the unique strengths of impact investing in Aotearoa NZ, and delivering scalable sector projects.

See our planned activities and contact Tan Huynh, our IIN Manager, to get involved.

Aotearoa New Zealand

Generating more affordable homes into Te Puna Hapori

BayTrust’s journey to sustainable and impact investment

At a recent Climate Action Aotearoa webinar Alastair Rhodes, Chair of the NAB, and CEO of BayTrust, shared their journey towards shifting their $250m investment portfolio towards being truly sustainable and taking action on climate change.

Along the way, BayTrust canned some (mis)perceptions about investing sustainably and with impact: You can have your (financial) cake and eat it sustainably too; flip the fiduciary switch; just because something is hard, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.

Over the last few years, BayTrust has been one of the best financial performing Community Trusts with their sustainability funds in particular outperforming their peers and a 24.3% return achieved to the year to March 2021. This has been done alongside a 90% reduction in their Trust's carbon footprint in its Global Equity and Emerging Markets portfolio exposures. Read webinar summary and BayTrust's media release.

Global Perspective

To monetise or not to monetise impact?

The debate continues - can impact be monetised? And if so, should it be monetised?

Globally there's a shift towards monetising impact with initiatives such as Impact-Weighted Accounts and Value Balancing Alliance.

But what about in the Aotearoa NZ context? Impact should be monetised wherever practical. However, monetisation is not always practical and depends on intended outcomes of the impact investment.

At a previous discussion, facilitated by the Impact Investing Network, members of NZ's impact investing community shared valuable and divergent perspectives.

You can read the takeaways from the IIN event and the article from Stanford Social Innovation Review to be informed about both sides of the debate.
