Find out how we’ve responded to the COVID-19 crisis, sign up to our collaborative new portal exclusively for small businesses -, we invite you along to our upcoming online coffee meetings and webinars and share our business as usual… just that it’s now all online! So grab a cuppa and read on!

Who saw this coming?

Welcome to our second newsletter of 2020, we certainly didn’t anticipate such disruption and impact to our community in our Quarter 1 plans.

Over the last week or so it has been apparent we were entering uncharted business waters, we have felt your concerns and genuine sadness around the impact to our small business community and wider society as a whole. We’ve seen behaviours that have been frankly shocking – what happened to the “be kind” campaign?

In the current climate we have exercised our own separation to do everything we can do to stay healthy and have less of an impact on our own business. We all can control the way we respond, whether that is business related, mindset or social.

We are encouraging our community to keep your eye on the prize, protect yourself from other people's commentary and reactions that are negative or scare mongering and restrict your access to the 24-hour news cycle.

You still have a job to do and a business to maintain and potentially grow. Despite the chaos there is always opportunity.

Since BYOM’s inception, we embraced technology using it in our workshop delivery and engagement and is integral to how we operate, with agility and flexibility. Working from home is the new going to work for some and we encourage you to get comfortable with it.

Refer back to your 2020 plans and review them. Control the controllable, embrace technology and pivot! Remember if you need help refocusing, register for our Ready Mindset Go coaching packages - we'll have you back on track in no time!

We are here to support you every step of the way.

What a great word and NEVER more apt to describe the effects of this current crisis, so we came up with the idea of a business swap shop...
Introducing the alternative small business stimulus package Business Swap Shop - - an online swap shop helping small businesses through (and beyond) the COVID-19 pandemic.
A collaboration between Blow your Own Mind and Kati McKeon (Hot Lizard Designs), Business Swap Shop is a free online portal where businesses directly exchange goods and services without using the medium of money, as in the early days of commerce.

As we know many may still not gain adequate relief from the additional Federal Government announcements to help sustain your businesses through this crisis, we’ve created this portal specifically for small businesses whose cash flow has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

If you or someone in your business network is feeling vulnerable, join free today. The process is simple - visit the website, set up your free listing with basic information as to what trade, product or service you offer and what you will accept in return, and get connected.

All businesses who engage in a swap are encouraged to leave a Google review for each other, which ensures you continue to build your online profile throughout this time, leaving you in a stronger position on which to trade when this is all over.

Visit the website and see what products, trades and services are already listed in your region and to join free today!

Look who's blown our mind...

At BYOM collaboration has always been our modus operandi.

When the idea for the Business Swap Shop sprung into our minds, we had our usual brainstorm, came up with the name and knew exactly who to call to get this portal from idea to reality. Kati McKeon at Hot Lizard Designs can get an online business presence up and running within days, not weeks and she did just that and much more!

Having been a client of Hot Lizard Designs, we set up a Zoom call with Kati, got her on board and the website was built and launched in three days!

We work with people we like, know and trust…and who are competent! Thank you Kati for jumping straight in, collaborating with us and executing the vision.

Hot Lizard Designs specialise in creating amazing Squarespace websites for small businesses. If you're looking to update your current site, or take your first steps online, contact Kati for a friendly chat today.

Webinar: Entrepreneurial Marketing
Presented by Small Business Development Corporation - Facilitated by BYOM
Wednesday 22 April 2020 | 9.30-1.30pm | Free

Entrepreneurial marketing throws the traditional marketing rulebook out. The focus of marketing now more than ever needs to concentrate on a consumer’s short attention span and need to understand 'WIIFM' (what’s in it for me?) as soon as possible.

During this session we will: review your current marketing activities; look at examples of entrepreneurial marketing; consider opportunities to collaborate; and devise a practical plan to be more creative and respond with agility to your target market.

Engaging minds...

An update on our business as usual.

Before travel restrictions, in early to mid March Lisa spent considerable time in Western Australia’s Mid West, Goldfields and Great Southern regions visiting Geraldton, Esperance, Albany and Denmark. The trip consisted of a great combination of: client delivery; workshop delivery and a keynote address at the ACCI Women’s Leadership Forum; and pre-recorded her talk for the Big Ideas Rural Virtual Summit about Entrepreneurial Leadership, finding enough signal in Newdegate to take live questions!

A full-on period of travel with the opportunity to tell the BYOM story and talk about mindset. Read Lisa’s article Entrepreneurial Leadership in Response to COVID-19 about her self imposed isolation on returning from the regions and what she learnt in the context of her own entrepreneurial mindset.

For the fifth year running Vicki is delighted to be a Judge for the Western Australian Information Technology and Telecommunications Alliance (WAITTA) Incite awards. The Incite awards are a showcase of the brilliance of ICT innovation in WA.  Find out more about the Incite Awards program for 2020.

On 18 March Vicki was invited to deliver an online PD webinar session on ‘Practicing Good Governance and Risk Management’ for the Board at Stirling Business Association (SBA). A key takeaway from this session was a recommendation to read the Not-for-Profit Governance Principles report, as the principles can still be applied to your own business particularly section 5 Risk from page 55 onwards. Read the report - Australian Institute of Company Directors - Not-for-Profit Governance Principles, Second Edition, January 2019

The SBA has a vision for a strong, vibrant and economically sound business community within the City of Stirling. Find out more about SBA.
