Alongside our birthday celebrations we feature the business journey of Fiona Mann from BLOCK 275, provide a PIVOT program update, congratulate Vicki on her appointment as Chair of Stirling Business Centre, share event & workshop reviews, welcome new EMP Practitioner Grace Mugabe & invite you to join us at the Women in Business Forum.

We’ve turned two…and have plenty to celebrate.

Last month we ticked over into our second year as a registered business and received confirmation from IP Australia that Blow Your Own Mind® is now a registered trademark.

Becoming trademarked was important to us to protect our brand and ensure we have exclusive rights to our business name – if you’re a business owner with a brand to protect, we strongly encourage you to seek trademark advice, the earlier the better. It was an important investment in our business that solidifies our position and our brand personality.

From a self-funded, standing start, we have walked our talk and grown authentically – we would like to take this opportunity to thank our BYOM community, clients and all who have provided us with opportunities, advice and encouragement.

It’s been a tremendous two years of growth as we now focus on 2021 and beyond!

Lisa and Vicki

Pivot: a business word, not a buzz word.

A light bulb moment just a mere few months ago meant we saw an opportunity and went for it. As featured in The West Australian and now a third of the way through, the Small Business Development Corporation’s PIVOT program, funded by the State Government’s Recovery Plan, has helped several hundred businesses take control, put plans in place and pivot their businesses.

With a self-paced blended learning approach, participants are guided to confront pain points such as finding new markets, financial management, lead generation and sales conversion - through templates and exercises, recorded and live webinars, content expert appearances and coaching support.

Program participants join us from a diverse range of industries including engineering, manufacturing, health and the arts and from across Western Australia, as north as Broome and as south as Esperance. As the largest study of entrepreneurial mindset to date, using the Entrepreneurial Mindset Profile ® tool in Australia, the PIVOT program will benchmark the intersection of entrepreneurship and economic development in Australia.

With small businesses representing 96% of all businesses in Western Australia - we are eager to present our findings, continue to develop the program and launch again to a new cohort in 2021.

More information about the PIVOT Program is available on our website or please contact us.

Look who has blown our minds…

Farming with her husband and three young sons at Eradu, on a small farm 70km east of Geraldton called Midoxgate, the Mann family found themselves needing to further diversify and buffer their farming enterprise, from the unpredictability of the weather and the markets. Enter their recently launched value-added extension - BLOCK 275 producing 100% natural, premium, cold pressed canola oil.

In April 2019 Fiona attended a two-day intensive workshop - Agrifoods Emerging Entrepreneurs - hosted by the Muresk Institute and RRR (The Rural, Regional, Remote Women’s Network of WA) and facilitated by BYOM.

During this workshop Lisa and Vicki challenged: “What is the worst thing that could happen if you put yourself and your business out there?”

Having always received strong support for the business concept, Fiona realised what was holding her back was her fear of failure. “I walked away from the workshop with a new found confidence and we made every effort to push forward with trying to complete the setup. In April 2020 after a terrible 2019 and a budget that just wouldn’t balance, it became a case of we need to get this happening”.

Boasting an array of health benefits, join us over on the blog as we explore Fiona’s Block 275 cold pressed canola oil inspiring journey which has lead them to where they are today. From idea, concept and first steps to back burner - followed by hard work, perseverance and the confidence to put herself out there as their business idea suddenly became a necessary priority. We discuss pain points, what’s next and the power of support and encouragement.

September/October 2020: ‘Join the Dots’ pilot program - South West, WA.

Sponsored by the Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development (DPIRD) and held at the much loved ‘Dardy’ – the “Grunt & Grants" session packed a punch, where we collaborated with Tara from Whitney Consulting who got the group excited about the possibilities for business growth through grant funding. It was an absolute privilege for Blow Your Own Mind ® to "top and tail" the program by leading the final workshop in October and tracking the mindset of the participants on their business journey. This program not only demonstrated the resilience of the small business community in the South West but their ferocious appetite to learn. Published outcomes will follow.

As more corporations understand the value of entrepreneurism and its purpose to drive innovation, with some even including reference within their core values, we use the EMP when we work with corporate teams. It is another capability data point that speaks directly to how innovative teams and individuals are, and more importantly, identifies skills gaps that are preventing the organisation from reaching full potential. Combined with traditional L & D material this is proving to be a point of difference for small and large businesses alike.
