JUNE 2020
In this edition...
We’ll showcase how upskilling has changed the direction and success of a business in Katanning, has influenced an increase in online engagement and how Vicki’s professional teaching qualifications and experience have stood the business in good stead to move forward again.

Control the controllable...

“Upskill” was the clear message from the Minister for Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business and we’ve certainly been doing our part to make this a reality.

We’ve had many more businesses access our 90 day coaching program as we’ve steered them through uncertain times, as well as witnessing some notable changes in some of the measurements of mindset; and it has been a person’s mindset, that has largely determined how people have responded to the challenges faced recently.

For example, we’ve seen a drop in optimism and self- confidence of those recently assessed and this pointed to, in some cases, a lack of knowledge and/or skill. It’s our belief that identifying and focusing on the cause is the only starting point. For instance workshops on “How to deal with bullying in the workplace” will continue whilst cultures that enable this behaviour exist!

In our work, when the cause has been addressed, we’ve seen people and businesses transform.  And lastly, in terms of our own upskilling, look out for our new online programs in the second half on 2020 – it’s been an incredible journey so far!

Stay intentionally focussed!

Lisa and Vicki

Look who's blown our mind...

Amy Richardson is the savvy businesswoman and environmental crusader behind Small Change Wholefoods, an independent unpackaged pantry and eco store, located in Katanning WA.

With humble beginnings Amy tested the appetite for her business by running the shop from the front hall of her home and attending the local markets once a month. She soon grew a steady group of customers who would fill their own containers with bulk foods such as rice, pasta and flour.

In April 2019 Amy attended a two-day intensive workshop Agrifoods Emerging Entrepreneurs hosted by MURESK Institute and RRR -The Rural, Regional, Remote Women's Network of Western Australia, facilitated by BYOM. With newfound insight and confidence Amy moved her shop premise from her home to a small shop inside the Katanning Co-op and following a successful year of business Amy has now moved her shop to a much larger site on the main street.

In light of recent events we asked Amy what impact Covid-19 had had on the business.  Despite experiencing delays in freight and unavailability of some items, having different suppliers to the big supermarkets meant they could continue to stock essentials such as flour, pasta and rice. This brought in new customers who couldn’t find what they needed elsewhere and Amy was also able to respond to consumer demand for items they hadn’t stocked previously such as yeast and baking equipment.

“I think with any business you want to undertake the most important thing is that you must be passionate about it, and when that passion is gone you need to make changes. Your mental and physical well-being depend on it. Making changes can be scary so knowing you have the support of other passionate individuals like Vicki and Lisa helps you focus on what you want to achieve, how to get there, and grow the belief in yourself that you are good enough!”

Amy has a strong and purposeful message: There is no planet B. If the 2.7 million people in Western Australia throw out ONE piece of plastic per day then that's 2.7 million pieces of plastic entering the environment EVERY DAY.

Small Change Wholefoods exists to reduce food and packaging waste, allowing customers to only buy what they need and reduce the amount of plastic entering the environment.
