OCTOBER 2019

Spring arrived with a beautiful sunny day for the Gathering in September and, thanks to Evelyn and Brian Tierney, we celebrated with a Maypole or should that be a Septemberpole? We were joined on the day by Fr Greg Burke from Infant Jesus in Morley and fellow members of the Brothers of Lazarus who made a very generous donation of $5,000 to L’Arche Perth. Board member Anabelle was the happy recipient of the cheque.

In October a Solidarity Night raised funds for the L’Arche community in Zimbabwe. Our Pizza and Jam Session raised $325. Thanks to Sam and Ben for leading us in our unique renditions of ABBA songs, Yellow Submarine, Twist & Shout and more. (Thank you ConnectGroups for those musical instruments; we were deafening.)

We did our best to ‘go African’ with colourful clothing and scarf-tying lessons from Google. Ali King summed up the feeling in the room, ‘We’ll have to do that again’….

Future Events

There are three important dates for your calendar in November: Friday 15th, Sunday 17th and Sunday 30th.

Dance for a Cause on Friday 15th is a fundraiser with all proceeds going to L’Arche Perth. Get a table together by contacting Anabelle on Amayze60@gmail.com

You will have already received your invitations to our AGM 2-4pm on Sunday,17th.

The final event for 2019 will be our Christmas Party which has been brought forward to Sunday 30 November at 6pm to avoid clashing with other events on our core members’ busy social calendars. We have invited Catch Music to join us again.

News from the board

We are pleased to welcome Ratih Sagung, CPA as our new Treasurer. Ratih hails from Denpasar, Bali and has a wealth of experience from many years in industry, education and health research. Please make her welcome at our AGM on 17 November. The board is grateful to Kim Metcalf who stepped in as interim Treasurer, streamlined many of our systems and completed the handover to Ratih.

National leader David Treanor had to postpone his visit to WA in October, however he face-timed our October board meeting to update us on progress towards securing a Community Leader for Perth. L’Arche Australia has been approved as a sponsor and will be advertising with L’Arche International and locally to fill this position.

Upcoming DVD Release

You may be interested to know that the DVD release of Summer in the Forest is scheduled for October. It will contain the full-length feature which includes footage of the L’Arche community in Bethlehem. Information about how to order will be sent in due course.

Sad news

We are sad to report the loss of two much loved members of Communities in Hobart and Brisbane. Some of you will remember Chris Lewis in Hobart who passed after a long illness on Sunday 13th October. Fondly remembered as a man who was strong yet gentle, fiercely independent, he had a wicked sense of humour and was a very loved core member of L’Arche Hobart.

In Brisbane the ‘grandmother of the Community’ Gladysmay O’Hara died suddenly on 3rd October. She is remembered as a loyal and firm friend who would pop in and check up on everyone; she was good at listening and a lot of fun but above all Gladysmay was great at praying for everyone there.

Community news

Rev’d Stephen Gibbs from St Nicholas Church in Floreat has announced his retirement from parish ministry, as Chaplain to Crosslinks and from our Spiritual Life Group. Stephen has been a long term and faithful member of our Community; he served on the founding board (2009) and has allowed L’Arche Perth generous use of the facilities at St Nichs, hosting board meetings, AGMs, dances, high teas and concert fundraisers.
The Spiritual Life Group will miss his wise counsel and thoughtful presence. We wish him the very best in retirement and thank him for all he has given to L’Arche Perth. He and wife Amanda will always be welcome at 165.

Research project

Curtin University students are hoping to find a small number of adults with intellectual disability who are willing to help with a research project. This project is the first in a series of projects that aim to increase the community involvement of adults with intellectual disability. Feel free to contact Lydia Timms on 0404 174 753.
