2020 Newsletter Term 4, Week 8

Parkes Christian School

A Message From the High School Coordinator

Time to Celebrate - For Everyone!
On the weekend, my eldest daughter Mila competed in her first ever Parkes Sharks swimming carnival. She's only been training for a few weeks and she literally got thrown in the deep end and had to compete!
There were plenty of nerves, especially from me, as I had visions of her not being able to finish and walking the rest of the way while everyone laughed - but she did an amazing job! She smashed her PB and I was just so proud of her...

K-4 Intensive Swimming
Kindergarten to Year 4 have been donning their swimmers and goggles over the last two weeks and swimming their little hearts out for the Intensive Swimming lessons held at Parkes Pool. All our students have made amazing strides in confidence and strokes!
They sure are wonderful little fish who have enjoyed the last two weeks of water fun and learning.
Year 8 Art (Girls)
One of the many exciting changes that happened this term was separating the Year 8 girls and boys during Art. With Christmas racing closer, it was thought that a Christmas Craft would be an excellent way to end this year with the girls.
The Year 8 girls are busy making their own wreaths to take home ready in time to hang on the Christmas tree.  They are busy learning new skills, such as stitching and how to work with a sewing machine, some of them for the very first time in their lives!
Orange Excursion with Year 5 and 6
On Friday the 20th of November, Stage 3 went on an excursion to Orange. We had guided tours of both the Art Gallery and the Museum. We marvelled at some realistic and abstract art pieces that made up the exhibit entitled 'Visions of Country,' which displayed images of our amazing countryside painted by different artists using different materials. We also observed historical artifacts that made up the 'Inhert: old and new histories' exhibit. Objects such as ancient Aboriginal stone tools and boomerangs along with a first settlers trunk and many other historically significant pieces.
We enjoyed exploring the Botanical Gardens and learning about the different sculptures and their significance, such as the Federation Arch. We rested in the shade of a variety of trees, walked past an ancient orchard, counted the many different Australian grasses planted on the top of a hill, used the sundials to tell the time, smelt the roses around the little church and enjoyed our recess and lunch at the Adventure Park Playground.
I think Ten Pin Bowling was the highlight with congratulations going to Madison Wynstra for getting the winning score.
Thank you to all our Stage 3 students for being responsible PCS students.
ICAS 2020
Each year Parkes Christian School students are invited to enter the ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools). This competition gives a broad insight of students performances across English, Science, Spelling, Mathematics, Digital Technologies and Writing.

Well done to our Primary and High School students that entered the competition; Charlotte Ballantyne, Mila Ballantyne, Aimee Ross, Clare Amery, Jasmine Clark, Alex Sammut-Paul, Zayn Cheema, Jack Greenland, Gemma Kite, Joshua King, Liam Freeman, Zaviar Cheema, Angelique Bland, Georgina Greenland and Arabella Kite.

Stage 4 - Baking with the Boys!
The Year 7B Technology class had a fun time working on creating delicious vanilla cupcakes this term. They have done well to use their food preparation skills in a cooperative way and are now skilled in producing some yummy cupcakes!
Year 5 Dance
This term we focused on Dance as part of the Primary CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) Syllabus. While dancing is a fun activity it is also beneficial for the student’s physical and mental health. In the video attach you will see the Year 5 students showing their moves to the song ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ by Justin Timberlake.

It is a new year in High School and the Year 7s have moved into Year 8 have started Music. In the last few weeks, Year 8 has been learning about pitch (the highness and lowness of notes) and a little bit about rhythm. This week, they had their first practical lesson in which they had to play a repeated chord progression on glockenspiels with some other instruments as well. Because they were playing together, the Year 8s had to learn two little lessons about playing in an ensemble that can also relate to life:
1. Always come prepared. It is much easier to play together, and make a good sound when you put the practice in and come prepared. It doesn't matter how much time it takes, or how much effort, keep on trying!
2. You need to listen to the others. In music, listening to the ensemble around you helps you stay in time, correct your volume, and gives you a good marker on how you should be playing. In life, it always helps to make sure you are listening to those around you, not just trying to be the soloist, making the loudest noise.
Halfway through the practical, we took a video of how we were going. Enjoy!

Yr 11 Celebration Excursion
Year 11 students have worked hard this calendar year and have all survived their first year of their HSC. They have endured the COVID-19 crisis, the online learning challenges and completed examinations of three of their HSC subjects. To celebrate their success we went to Dragon Boat racing at Lake Endeavour. The students worked really well as a team and the instructors were really impressed by their effort and Mr Wynstra’s skills. Beth, one of the instructors, noted that our students were the best they have had and would love to see them compete in future events because they listened really well and worked in harmony with each other.
