A Message from the Primary Coordinator

Moving has its highs and lows!

Just recently my husband and I moved house. The excitement of the new home and the opportunities that it would bring was the same as how thankful we were for our previous home. We also had the stress of packing up our things and concerns for changes to the daily routine.

The last few weeks of Term 4 for Primary students also present these same experiences. Thankfulness for the year that was, the stress...

Writing with Year 2
Year 2 have been busy working on persuasive texts during their writing time this term. We have learned about how to write a good introduction, which states our opinions. We have also looked at writing our arguments and expanding them and then wrapping up with a great conclusion. This week we wrote on the topic: Year 2 should have a class pet. Here are some of our texts:
Year 3/4 Wellington Excursion
Stage 2 has been learning about natural and manmade features in our Geography lessons. So we were really excited to learn that we were going to the Wellington Caves for our excursion this term. The group had such a great time in the caves and learned a
lot about this natural marvel right here in country NSW. We had the opportunity to go see the Cathedral Cave where they used to celebrate church services.  The students learned all about the formation of crystals and rocks, the difference between stalactites and stalagmites as well as see some amazing fossils. The students loved the discovery lab where they learnt about the different time periods and megafauna (large animals) that used to roam Australia. The students were able to explore some bones of animals believed to be 800 000 years old.
Remembrance Day
Our 2020 School Captains Laura Cabban and Sophie Field represented PCS at the annual Remembrance Day ceremony held at Cook Park on Wednesday 11th November by reading a list of the names of the fallen. Lest We Forget
Year 3/4 Drama
This term I have been delighted to work with Mrs King and Years 3 and 4 on their Drama skills. We have spent lessons learning a number of drama games building up skills in focus and movement, in addition to developing and rehearsing a class play each. Both classes performed a version of a classic fairytale - Year 3 performed 'Little Red Boxershorts', revolutionising our understanding of 'Little Red Riding Hood', while Year 4 revealed the truth about Cinderella in 'Cinder...Really?'.
We experimented with creating props and sound with our bodies and movement and worked on developing characterisation through the ways we use our voice. It was so much fun to work with these classes; they were enthusiastic and ready to give anything a go - well done to all of you!...

Strength and Shine
Year 9 and 10 have spent the last three weeks with Miss Oates and Mr Quince discussing life and all sorts of things. They heard messages about their worth, value and purpose and what it means to be a young man and woman. It was also a great time to openly discuss things that were challenging them and teenagers in general. Miss Oates and Mr Quince had a great time getting to know this great group of people and we are so blessed to have them at our school.
We finished our last session on Thursday with the boys hearing from Mr Milling and the girls making a beautiful photo piece as well as everyone having lunch together.
Year 9/10 English Reading Buddies
Last week the Year 9/10 Advanced English class enjoyed some time in the Library reading with Mrs Nunn’s Year 3 class. Early in 2020 this was a regular occurrence and the students all enjoyed the experience, so as this was the last week the Year 9/10 class will be together, we thought it might be nice to end the 'school year’ how we started. Both year levels benefitted greatly from the time they spent together. The Year 9/10 English students were very impressed with how well Year 3 were reading!
Open Girls League Tag
Last Thursday, the PCS Open girls league tag team travelled to Dubbo to compete in the Girls League Tag Gala Day at Jubilee Oval. They were accompanied by Mrs van Wyk, Mrs Wilson and chauffeured by Mr Wynstra. Year 10 boys Nick Unger (Head Coach), Tyler Boland and Logan Varcoe (Assistant Coaches) also attended on the day to conduct extra training sessions for the girls in between games and join the teachers on the sideline as the girls cheer squad. After the year it has been with no travelling for sport allowed, it was great to be able to finally go somewhere to compete. The girls were super pumped!
They all played incredibly well on the day, improving with each game. The girls were unfortunately defeated in all three matches by some very stiff competition but their 'never give up attitude' was unwavering. Player of the day was Leilani Lavaka (Team Captain) who was sensational in both her attacking and defending and her kicking was second to none, providing her team many opportunities to score. Try of the day went to Bella Gould for her fancy footwork and breakaway run up the sideline. All the girls played very well and were excellent representatives of PCS. Their sportsmanship and team spirit is to be commended. Well done girls. We are so proud of your efforts.
Year 12 Graduation Evening
Wow! What a fantastic night we had on Friday as we celebrated the graduation of our Year 12 class for 2020. Earlier in the year, it seemed like the Grad might never go ahead, but we were very blessed to be able to have a graduation with plenty of family and friends in attendance.
We had 13 graduates present on the night, with Jasmin Dalton not able to come due to the COVID restrictions in Queensland affecting her plans to come back to NSW last month. A limited number of staff were also able to attend, along with our Year 11 SRC representatives. The smaller numbers were a little disappointing, but in the context of 2020, having 100 people able to attend was a wonderful outcome.
All the graduating students looked fantastic in their formal clothing and made a grand entrance on the catwalk at the front of the room. The night featured all the usual speeches, photo slideshows, a game of Family Feud that saw the Year 12s beat the teachers, and a video made by the staff that allowed them to show off their lip synching and dancing skills!
A huge thank you to Parkes Services Club for preparing the venue to cater for our COVID-safe plans and for preparing and serving a delicious three-course meal. Also the team who decorated the venue and prepared the items - Hollie Oates, Angela Wilson, Kristen Barrass, Glen Westcott, Hayley Ballantyne, George Ward and Jason Wynstra - and everyone who helped make the night possible and who helped pack up at the end.
It was a great night and a fitting way to send off our Class of 2020.
