Railroad Street Bar & Grill

When we travel the roads in our area, many vehicles display magnets or stickers indicating the driver’s favorite vacation destinations (i.e., SIC, OBX, Exit 0), but sometimes deciphering those acronyms can be difficult.  A “ЯR” magnet was a particular puzzler for me, but I eventually learned that the Railroad Street Bar and Grill has promoted their business by providing these free magnets to patrons.

It's another restaurant we found that patrons would be unlikely to stumble upon in normal travels. (Coincidentally, it’s located adjacent to the railroad tracks on Railroad Street off Linfield Road (Main Street) and the turn is easy to miss.)

QUICK BITES
Make this: Giada's meatball recipe

Every now and then we come across a recipe that is too good to keep to ourselves. This is one of them The first thing most people think of when they think meatballs is sauce. While this recipe calls for some sauce, it's not the star of the show by any stretch. And this recipe is easy to follow so even a novice can make it happen. Check out Giada's De Laurentiis' delicious meatball salad recipe here, thanks to our friends at foodnetwork.com.

Welcome to the Turkey Club

The A Moveable Feast Guy took a week off last week, but headed out to Ambler and Costa Deli after seeing a delicious looking turkey club on Instagram. Costa did not disappoint. Just like the post said, the bacon was crispy and the turkey was slow roasted. The meat wasn't piled on nearly as high as Diane's Sidewalk Deli, but it was plenty filing, so we'll leave it up to you to decide. Have a suggestion on where to find the best turkey club? Email the A Moveable Feast Guy here.

... the rest of Ron's column

Owner Mike McCloskey is a real estate developer who was looking for an apartment building in 2005 and happened upon the Railroad Street property. The building needed repair, having housed the Montgomery House Hotel starting in 1850 and then the renamed Linfield Hotel in the 1930’s.  Mike saw potential as a rental property, but he was uncertain about successful operation of the first-floor bar and restaurant.

The handy McClosky worked for a year renovating the building on weekends and enlisted a neighbor trained in the culinary business to help develop the restaurant concept that was opened as the Railroad Bar & Grille in 2006.

Indoor and outdoor seating areas can accommodate sixty diners each, and a bar that seats nearly three dozen patrons provide a space that offers casual dining in a family friendly environment.  A game room adjacent to the bar has eight pinball machines and a pool table. Decorations affixed to the walls throughout the space demonstrate the eclectic approach of the RRG’s McCloskey and will probably elicit a chuckle or at least a smile from visitors. And you can hear the trains’ whistle each time they pass during a visit.

The availability of over twenty draft craft beers and a variety of custom cocktails is responsible for some of the bar room draw.  Wine is also available... to be sure the entire adult spectrum of tastes is satisfied. When possible, foods are locally sourced, and all dishes are made from scratch. Salads, appetizers, and soup are available to begin the meal. Pretzel bites, wings (w/ thirteen sauce choices), Deviled Egg creations, and Chili are among some of the starter choices. The entree list has evolved into a whimsical cheese centric menu board offering many variations of the grilled cheese sandwich. Pork Roll Grilled Cheese, Chicken Bacon Ranch Grilled Cheese, Italian Hoagie Grilled Cheese, Carolina Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese, Meatball Parm Grilled Cheese and Lobster Grilled Cheese are all prepared on Texas Toast and served with chips (Fries available as an upgrade). Sandwiches and a selection of burgers (including a “St. Lucifer Spice” version) are available with lesser amounts of cheese (or none) – Pulled Pork, Roast Beef, and Beer Battered Haddock.

So, to start the meal we decided to sample the Railroad Appetizer sampler – tender Chicken Fingers, Crispy Chicken Wings dressed with a mild heat sauce and Breaded Shrimp over French Fries. This was a great sampler and good start to the meal. Our co-diners selected the boneless Chicken Wings with a mild sauce. For dinner I chose the Cajun Meatloaf Grilled Cheese, prepared with a flavorful dense slice of meatloaf with a Cajun Sauce and Chipotle Gouda cheese. (A diner at an adjoining table recommended this as it’s his favorite dish). DW Sherri chose the Doggy Grilled Cheese made with Hot Dogs sliced lengthwise and joined with melted Cheddar Cheese between slices of Grilled Bread. Our dining mates chose a regular burger (good, but not a qualifier for my ongoing survey for “Best Burger”) and a “Richie Rich Grilled Cheese”.  The Ritchie Rich was my second choice and will be on my list for the next visit – made with Bacon, thinly sliced Filet, sauteed Onions and Vermont cheddar.

If you have a craving for decent bar food and a sampling of craft beers, check your GPS app and set your sights for the Railroad Bar & Grill in Linfield.  (Don’t forget to ask for your magnet!)
