Jasper's Backyard
In the past twenty years, Conshohocken has become a dining destination for a variety of cuisine types at over twenty different restaurants. In the former home of the Casmar Café in Conshohocken, owners Mike and Kelly Sloane began extensive renovations of the circa 1800’s building in 2014 before opening as Jasper’s Backyard in the summer of 2016.
So, who is Jasper? If I can share some interesting history, the origin of the “Jasper” name can be traced back to mid-1600’s England when William Penn sought fellow countrymen to join him in development of the New World. William Penn’s English neighbor Jasper Farmer purchased 5000 acres of this land (~8 square miles) from Penn which eventually came to be known as Conshohocken borough, Plymouth Township and Fort Washington. (This specific land plot map is featured prominently behind the hostess station.)

... the rest of Ron's column
Jasper’s interior is fitted with industrial style lighting and décor with farmhouse wood accents throughout and features a unique penny covered floor walkway (“Penny Lane”) between the bar and dining areas. Jasper’s can accommodate more than one hundred patrons in indoor, outdoor and bar seating with a supplemental “Barage” (Bar + Garage) area adjacent to the outdoor patio. Live entertainment is piped throughout the establishment from its home in the Barage Thursdays through Saturday.
Executive chef Scott Simmers returned to his Ambler hometown some years back after a globe hopping early career in Las Vegas, Hawaii (Four Seasons- Kona), the Bahamas and Arizona. The New American themed cuisine lineup developed for Jasper’s suits both the atmosphere and the variety of craft beer offerings.
Small Plates, Salads, Handhelds and Entrees are offered with enough variety to satisfy a wide range of diners. Among the offered starters are Wings, Hummus, Buffalo Cauliflower, and Cheesy Corn Dip. Justin’s House Salad and Caesar, Cobb, and Bibb salads can be supplemented with protein choices of Fried Tofu, Grilled or Fried Chicken, Grilled Shrimp, Scallops, Salmon, or Flank Steak. Handheld options include Burgers, Shrimp BLT, Brisket Cheesesteak and Fried Chicken sandwiches. Entrée choices include Filet Mignon, Flank Steak, Roasted Chicken, Salmon, Scallops, Chilean Sea Bass and Ratatouille. Signature tuber creations include Conshy Crab Fires (with Lump Crab meat), Cajun spiced Three Alarm Fries, Sweet Potato Fries and Brisket Fries.
The craft beer menu carried seven different options with choices of draft brews from Bell’s, Cape May, Levante, Allagash and Downeast breweries. A selection of bottles and cans supplements the draft choices. Levante Lager was my choice and an Allagash White for DW Sherri. After checking out the menu choices we decided to try the Garlic Chili Wings as an appetizer. The wings were crispy as requested and coated with a light chili glaze and finished with sesame seeds. Hot seasoned wings (“Hank’s Hot”) are also available, but these wings were a good changeup from the usual. For dinner, I continued my sampling of the region’s burgers, ordering a Medium-Rare Cheeseburger with Lettuce, Tomato and Onion on an optioned-up pretzel roll. The burger was fine but cooked closer to a “medium plus” and the burger could have used a bit more salt on the preparation. I had to request additional onion as it was served with only two small partial rings versus a full slice.
DW Sherri chose the Cajun Fried Chicken Sandwich served on a Sweet Potato Brioche bun. The chicken breast was well cooked and was not spicy to our tastes, consistent with the waitress’s description at the time of order. We both opted for French Fries to accompany the burgers, but I chose the “Firecracker Fries” with Cajun seasoning for an upcharge. When I noted that the Cajun seasoning was virtually undetectable on the fries, the waitress assured me of the presence of the seasoning and it that was “subtle”. The fries were otherwise average and didn’t seem to take a direct route from the fryer to our table.
Jasper’s Backyard has an inviting atmosphere, good service, and acceptable food choices, but menu pricing on food and drink may be a bit high comparative to similar establishments. Reservations on OpenTable. Substantial outdoor seating available. Entertainment schedule posted on website.
