Eddie V's Prime Seafood

On the outer perimeter of the King of Prussia Mall, Eddie V’s stands apart from the hustle and bustle of the mall with a separate parking lot just off Route 202 (Dekalb Pike). On our first visit to Eddie V‘s about two years ago we were treated to dinner by DW Sherri ‘s boss (LAG for short), who is a fellow foodie and a fan of this column. We expected Eddie V’s to be along the steakhouse vein a la Morton’s and The Capital Grille but found it was much more seafood centric, although USDA Prime steaks are also available. I guess we missed the nuance of the full name “Eddie V’s Prime Seafood” in the signage.

During this birthday celebration visit I learned that Eddie V’s is part of the Darden family of restaurants which includes some other local dining spots such as The Capital Grille, Olive Garden, Bahama Breeze, Seasons 52, Longhorn Steakhouse, and the Yard House. Clearly Eddie V’s and The Capital Grille are in the top tier of Darden offerings, with white tablecloth service, attentive staff, and exceptional food quality. There are approximately twenty Eddie V‘s locations across the United States, far less plentiful than Darden’s The Capital Grille (60+) and Olive Garden (800+). The first Eddies V’s was opened in Austin, Texas in 2000 by independent owners who sold the brand to Darden in 2011.

... the rest of Ron's column

Eddie V‘s offers appetizers, salads, an assortment of Prime seafood and steak entrees, and desserts. Shrimp cocktail, five types of raw oysters, Caviar, Shellfish Tower creations, Lobster Bisque, Calamari, Lobster Tacos, and Crab Cakes are available as beginning courses.  Seafood entrees included Steamed Hong Kong Style Chilean Sea Bass, Sauteed Scallops, Mediterranean Branzino, Mustard and Rye Whiskey Glazed Salmon and Broiled Lobster.  For beef lovers, USDA Prime 28 Day Aged steak choices include Filet Mignon, New York Strip and Bone-in Ribeye, with the option to add seafood accompaniments.

We started with drinks as we reviewed the menu choices with DW Sherri selecting the Grey Goose Cosmo and I chose a Patron Silver Margarita (offered “straight up” on the cocktail menu but I had it iced).  As expected, the drinks were great and reflected the quality of the underlying liquors.

For starters I was able to choose from one of four types of oysters, so I selected an even split of the Bluepoint (CT) and Blush Point (MA). The Oysters were served with the traditional Mignonette and Cocktail Sauce with supplemental “Atomic Horseradish” to kick things up a notch. Horseradish fans will get as much as they bargain for if not careful with this evil root – use sparingly to start. The oysters were served on a bed of ice, fresh and delicious without a hint of grit.  DW Sherri selected the Shrimp Cocktail appetizer with four large prawns served with lemon, spicy mustard, cocktail sauce, and the Atomic Horseradish. Cooked well and chilled before serving, the prawns were a great appetizer choice.

For our dinner, DW Sherri chose Seared Scallops prepared with Citrus Fruit wedges with Roasted Almonds in a Brown Butter sauce. The scallops were perfectly browned on both sides and cooked through with the citrus enhancing the overall flavor of the dish. I chose Jumbo Gulf Shrimp that were roasted with Lump Crab and a toasted breadcrumb topping. The shrimp were cooked perfectly but I thought a bit more crab would have been appropriate as it difficult to judge the “Lump Crab” grade with a less than significant portion.

As found in many upscale restaurants, side dishes are a la carte. Eddie V’s was offering Grilled Asparagus, Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Sautéed Spinach, Butter Poached Lobster Mashed Potatoes, Au Gratin Cheddar Potatoes (our choice for the evening), Crab Fried Rice with Mushrooms and Scallions, and Truffled Macaroni and Cheese.

There were numerous dessert options and we decided to share the Bananas Foster Butter Cake, which was flambéed tableside and served with Butter Pecan ice cream.   A pour of brandy over the dessert was set alight with the warning “Don’t eat it until the flame burns out”.   We could hardly wait, but common sense prevailed   We really urge diners to leave room for this dessert on their visit.

If you are comfortable with a limited Seafood and Steak menu, Eddie V’s offers refined dining and is a great spot to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion.    Expect the resumption of live Happy Hour Jazz as COVID protocol requirements subside.  Reservations available on OpenTable.
