Jem Restaurant
Where were you in the mid-nineteen seventies? I was living my “Wonder Years” in Junior High School (before middle schools were a thing).
Owners Tony and Linda Bello began operation of the Jem Restaurant in 1974 in the Swede Square Shopping Center on Germantown Pike and Swede Road. Tucked between a grocery store and a beer store and easy to escape notice, the spot has been popular with locals for almost five decades.
You can tell when you walk in the door that it’s a neighborhood favorite, serving simple breakfast and lunch service at a reasonable price. The space has a Fifties’ motif decorated with nostalgic items adorning the walls. Formica tables with embedded 50’s ads and knickknacks covering the walls (forty-five records, roller skates, a drive-in movie speaker and time appropriate photos from the era) allow diners to reminisce about the past while contemplating their orders.

von C Oktoberfest this Saturday
That's right, as in TOMORROW! This Saturday from 12 to close, which we are very cleverly calling our vonCtoberfest, von C announced on their Instagram page. It will be a day long celebration full of beer, food and merriment. We will have The Willis Brothers here and in addition to their usual ribs and chicken they will be serving up Bratwurst, German pretzels and more. And the Norristown brewery will also be tapping their Oktoberfest beer, a seasonal pour that we're personally looking forward to partaking in!

Food Truck Friday in Ambler
If you're in the area tonight you should definitely swing by the Ambler Yards Beer Garden between 5 and 9 p.m. There are too many food trucks to mention, but on the roster is Bad Mother Shuckers and BB Kitchen and Grill. And of course there will be beer. And it's all for a good cause, benefitting the Upper Dublin Education Foundation's #UDStrong Fund.

Nippers chicken cheese steak
In our quest for the best chicken cheese steak in the area we landed at Nippers in West Norriton Township. Solid entry, but it could have used a little more cheese. And we can't seem to get past what a difference toasting the bread, or finishing off the sandwich in the oven before serving, makes.

... the rest of Ron's column
There’s no fanciness here, just good home cooked food, ranging from Eggs, Pancakes, and Belgian Waffles to Creamed Chipped Beef and occasional special creations. Two eggs, Home Fries (shredded or homestyle Red Bliss Potatoes), your choice of breakfast meat and toast sets you back only eight dollars. Coffee, soda, juices, ice cream sodas and authentic blended milkshakes are available as an accompaniment to your meal. Lunch service offerings include soups, salads, and sandwich varieties of Monte Christo, Burgers, Sausage, Cheesesteaks, Zeps, Wraps, and Patty, Ham or Turkey Melts. Though normally open until early afternoon, Jem hosts special Ladies Bingo Nights on the last Wednesday of every month- reservations required (see Facebook).
I ordered a standard breakfast with scrambled eggs, Shredded Home Fries, Scrapple and Rye Toast and DW Sherri chose Creamed Chipped Beef over Toast. Served hot, the food was satisfying and well prepared. Portions are ample, the service is quick and pleasant, and the prices are reasonable.
The longevity of the Jem is a result of its popularity with a broad spectrum of the population. (It has been said that the Jem was the source of a Montgomery County scandal discovery by an intrepid reporter who overheard suspect discussions by local politicians some years ago.) Area residents are probably aware of this spot but it’s a recommended stop for those traveling through the area for a quick bite to eat. (Just be careful with those “private” conversations!)
