Black Horse Tavern

We had a good dining experience in this spot a few years ago, but the atmosphere left something to be desired, primarily due to a “smoking permitted” environment inside. Shortly after our visit the owners gutted the Black Horse Tavern in Fairview and completely rebuilt it the from the ground up. Brightly lit with more than ten large screen TVs for optimal sports viewing, the refreshed BHT space is a good spot to enjoy drinks and some tavern fare while enjoying your favorite sports telecasts.

The Black Horse Tavern business has grown to four locations, but the Fairview and Plymouth outposts are the two that are currently operating, as the East Norriton and Phoenixville spots have been indeterminately idled (COVID Staffing).  (A bit of trivia – the founding Black Horse Tavern in Plymouth was originally named Black Bull Tavern and Motel.)

QUICK BITES
Via Veneto's new location taking shape

What's old is new again... what goes around comes around? Something like one of those, anyway. Long an icon on the north end of Markley Street in Norristown before moving to East Norriton Township, Via Veneto is rebuilding in their old location to serve the residents of the county seat once again. We don't have a reopening date yet, but stay tuned! For now you can check out their website here.

... the rest of Ron's column

At Fairview, the clientele was a mix of those seeking refreshment after a day of work as well as couples and groups gathering for an informal dinner. Table seating is at high tops, spaced out due to COVID protocols.  An outdoor patio area intended for outdoor dining will be utilized as the weather changes.  A pool table offers a chance at competitive activity during your visit and patrons can select music from a jukebox to play over an impressive sound system.

Wings, beef and chicken cheesesteaks, quesadillas, wraps, salads, flatbread pizzas and a selection of a dozen burgers are features on the menu. These offerings are supplemented by platters of Fried Shrimp, Fish and Chips, Stir Fry London Broil, Ravioli, Steamers and Chicken Parmesan. The menu is kicked up with Cincinnati Chili and nearly twenty types of grilled cheese sandwiches (hmm, I have seen that somewhere else before…  any foodie fan guesses?). The standard menu choices are supplemented by daily specials posted on a dining room board.

Serving over ten draft beers with a suitable offering of craft beers (including Founder’s, Victory, Delco’s 2SP), lovers of the hopped beverage will find something to enjoy. Pricing on domestic drafts is incredibly low and the beer is served frosty cold in a prechilled glass.

We chose to start with an order of their meaty hot wings, served with celery and blue cheese. The wings were well cooked with the right amount of heat in the standard hot sauce, though there are eight other sauce choices available.

I chose the Zep Burger (special burger of the day), served with Salami, Tomato and Raw Onion on a fresh Kaiser roll. It was ordered medium but delivered as medium well, but a good burger, nonetheless.  DW Sherri selected a Cheesesteak Salad, with fresh chopped salad adorned with a mound of cheesesteak. (A special note, on this evening weeknight there was no waitress service - food and beverage orders are placed directly with the bartender.)

We noted the popularity of the appetizing flatbreads served to other tables and we put that on our list for the next visit.  Good food, COLD beer, and reasonable prices makes the Fairview Village Black Horse Tavern a spot worthy of a visit.
