In light of outspoken public discontentment regarding coliving developments in Dublin, An Bord Pleanála rejected Bartra Capital’s development plans for Cookstown, stating that it would “fail to provide an acceptable living environment” and a “notable shortfall in the provision of sufficient communal facilities”. Point made: coliving can and will be judged by standards of space quality, a premier in the coliving world.

NYC SUPPORTS COLIVING
Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Housing 2.0 initiative is meant to create and preserve 300,000 affordable homes by 2026. Out of that grew the ShareNYC initiative, which is meant to promote shared housing units on privately owned sites with the support of City funds. A first step to go into the direction to subsidize coliving developments, the same way cohousing developments are receiving state funding in several countries.
LAND FOR THE MANY
George Monbiot and others from the UK Labour Party have put together a report calling for reform on policy relating to land ownership in the UK, in an attempt to decrease wealth and property inequalities. Urban and land policies are one leading topic when it comes to hindrance for coliving development. What could new policies look like? To be continued.
