From the Director

Hey Band!

We made it through Band-tober! We finished up the marching band season last Saturday at VMBC. The band performed well, but unfortunately we did not place in finals. There is still plenty to be proud of:
  • First, we placed 3rd in the state for Class 5A.
  • Second, we finished less than a point outside of finals, a great improvement from our last appearance that shows we're knocking on the door!
Lastly, I am incredibly proud of how the students conducted themselves throughout this entire season.

I firmly believe that success is something that you choose, and that to have a choice, we must recognize that failure is always an option. We had plenty of reasons to "fail": the pandemic limited our musical & physical development; half the members had never marched a competitive season before; we're only beginning to re-acclimate to the pressures and accountability that come with resumption of in-person activities.

Despite having plenty of excuses, the students NEVER made them. We learned how to rehearse this season, with an efficiency and productivity that we have never achieved before. We learned how to truly hold together as a band family, to be kind, supportive, and extending of grace. We learned perseverance in the face of adversity (Remember those three weeks of rehearsals that were rained out? Remember the lags in supply chains for needed materials? Remember the shifts needed of us to help with the "bigger picture"?).

All of those challenges feel distant, and I am left with gratitude. I am so lucky to be the FHS Band Director. I get amazing human beings to teach, who each have amazing parents supporting them every step of the way.

This winter is going to be an exciting time as well. Our Winter/Spring Activities begin on Monday, November 15th. The rehearsal schedule has been uploaded to the band calendar at Make sure that you subscribe to the correct calendars (we keep them separate, as not every member of the larger program participates).

If you have questions about price or requirements, the first week is an introductory week. Show up, try something new, and we'll take care of those next steps together!

In particular, I want to encourage all students to consider joining our Winter Guard. Our coaches, Guy Groves and Liz King, made a HUGE impact on our program already. They have made a fun, supportive, challenging environment where students can thrive. This will be their first season with a competitive unit, and I can't wait to see what they do. THE MORE THE MERRIER!!! It might be something that is outside of your comfort zone, but it is worth simply trying it out. If you have questions, shoot me an email at

Football Game Friday, November 12!

That's right! We're not done yet! The Fairfax HS varsity football team will host the regional tournament vs. West Potomac HS this Friday, November 12! Report time is 6:15pm for a 7:00pm kickoff. While we will not be doing the full show, we still need a handful of volunteers for the evening.

Please see the SignUp Genius and we'll see you at the game!

To everyone who graciously gave their time and talent, everyone who donated money and needed items, everyone who heeded the call for help, thank you. Without you, we don't get all our forms turned in. Without you, we don't look fabulous in our new uniforms. Without you, we don't get to the competitions. Without you, we don't have the fundraisers. Without you, we don't get fed. Without you, the little and often overlooked things don't get done. Without you, we don't have a marching season.

It's often said that Band is a family, but also Band is a team, and this team gets the job done. From grateful hearts, thank you for making this a successful marching season.

Andrea and Glenn Cavert

Without parent volunteers the Marching Band and Color Guard couldn’t get onto the field, travel to competitions or celebrate with food. Thank you to the parents who helped during the competition season. I loved reconnecting with veteran parents and getting to know new band parents. You and your students are remarkable. It was a truly memorable  season. Parents of seniors, thank you for sharing your kids with us. Best wishes!! Parents of  underclassmen please consider how you want to help next season.

Secure Your Volunteer Position for Next Season Now!

Quote from a parent of a senior: ”It's so much fun to help - thanks to you all (volunteers) for being such great role models for our kids!"

I promise this will be how you feel when you sign up to volunteer with the band.  There are 33 families graduating this year, and many have been a huge help this year - so we will need many hands to help with next year's season!

Please consider stepping up to fill the many team leader roles that will be vacant next season, including:

  • Operations / trailer lead
  • PIT / prop lead
  • Spirit wear lead
  • Treasurer
  • Uniform co-manager
  • Car wash coordinator
  • Band photographer

If you're not ready to take on a lead role, simply sign up to be part of one of the existing teams - ALL need more help.
