If you guessed Amy Schumer, you guessed right!

Amy Schumer advocates for proper treatment to help impact the lives of people living with Autism. She opened up about her husband's autism diagnosis and said "the tools we've been given have made his life so much better and our marriage and our life much more manageable. I just wanted to encourage people to not be afraid of that stigma."

What makes the autism debate in Ontario so complicated?

To understand the political furor over funding for children with autism in this province, you need to know the basics: What is the disorder — and what does effective treatment look like?

Why treating autism is so astonishingly expensive in Ontario.

Some sell their homes. Some quit their jobs to provide therapy full-time. For parents of children with autism in this province, arranging for effective treatment can be a huge financial burden.

Meet Christopher*

3 years ago, Christopher would rather climb multiple chairs and risk falling over than to ask his mom or dad to get him a goldfish from the top shelf. Christopher is among 1 in 42 males affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Canada.

After trying different unsuccessful services to help Christopher communicate and learn age-appropriate behaviours, his mom stumbled upon Shining Through Centre on the internet. This changed everything!

Today, thanks to the intensive early intervention program at the Shining Through Centre, Christopher learned to ask for his favourite snack (goldfish) sooner than expected. Shortly after that, he learned to give his mom kisses and talk about the changes in the weather.

Although he has autism, his achievements at Shining Through have dramatically improved his quality of life. It's easy to take our ability to communicate for granted. It takes time, commitment and expertise in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to help children with autism to break through their barriers of not being able to communicate effectively.

Shining Through Centre says yes to children with autism having dreams! We say yes to families having hope for their loved ones with autism! With 20 years of experience and reliance on evidence-based intervention derived from the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), we know that we have had a positive impact on every child and family member that has walked through our doors. From a parent hearing their child speak to siblings being able to play and bond with each other, we have helped them reach their fullest potential.

Easter fun at Beecroft this past April
Learners from the Woodbridge and Beecroft centre had an amazing easter egg hunt party on Monday the 22nd of April, 2019.

The learners were eager to find eggs filled with chocolate and candies, engage in some arts and crafts that involved face painting, mug decoration and bead-making amongst other things. Everyone had fun while working on their social and problem-solving skills. This also helped to develop their gross and fine motor skills!

Shining Through is thankful for an opportunity that allowed our learners to enjoy this fun Easter activity.

A big thank you to Nicole Irwin and all the wonderful volunteers who helped to make Easter special for our learners, we appreciate you!
We love fundraising events!
