Camp Cormorant Partnership:

We are thrilled to partner with Camp Cormorant again this year to serve the children of our Survivors of Heroes.  Here’s what one Survivor from Season 5 had to say about their experience:

“While attending Holbrook Farms retreat last summer, my children were able to attend a local YMCA camp for the week. One of the biggest obstacles for moms being able to attend retreats is having to find child care for our children while we are away. Many times we are unable to participate in these retreats because we cannot get child care. My children were so excited to be able to go to Camp Cormorant. They have been to a few camps for children of the fallen, but this was the first time they got to go to a “normal camp for normal kids”. A few of their favorite activities were horseback riding, riding “the shark”, and the nighttime bonfires with s’mores. They made friends with their bunk mates and didn’t want to leave camp when it was time to go. One of my kids said “I LOVED that camp, and I hope I get to go back again one day!” Knowing my kids were close by in a place where they were safe, happy, and were taken care of, really helped me to be able to enjoy my time away with the other moms/widows. I was able to relax and have a wonderful time without worrying about what was going on back home or if my kids needed me.”

Partnership Spotlight

Carol Seefeldt is the creative mind and owner of Wired Up! Creative Wire Design. She lives in Moorhead, MN which is 40 minutes away from Holbrook Farms Retreat. She hand crafts individual pieces of wire art so that no two are exactly the same. She has been a supporter and partner with Holbrook Farms Retreat for several years and her art has become a staple of our closing ceremony at our Survivors of Heroes Retreats. Each of our guests gets to go home with a special piece of her art that was selected just for them. Her heart and service for Holbrook Farms Retreat is evident in each piece she crafts for the Survivors and her continued dedication and support of our mission. We are so grateful for Carol and Wired Up!

Paying it Forward

Daniel Wade was 2 months shy of returning home from deployment, (where his family was months away from moving to Monterey, California for Daniel to attend Naval Post Graduate School) when he had a massive heart attack aboard his ship (USS Jason Dunham).  He was reported as saying "I don't feel so good" while at the gym before he collapsed in his room. The crew worked very hard to get him ashore. Unfortunately, it took three and a half hours to get him to the nearest hospital. He was a runner, he had no history of health concerns - there was no reason for anyone to ever expect this.

After Daniel's death, his wife Yasin saw a friend post pictures on Facebook about Holbrook Farms Retreat.  She had never heard of Holbrook and her friend told her it was a great place to renew yourself and relax. Yasin thought that sounded like the perfect mom break.  She had an amazing experience her first time at Holbrook Farms. "I arrived exhausted and I left feeling renewed. I loved that it was a smaller group because it really gave the opportunity to have great conversations.  There were so many extra touches to make you feel special. My favorite thing was to go out on the paddleboard each morning and to sit and be and just listen to the waves. It was my quiet space, so peaceful. There's something healing about being on the lake."

This May, Yasin will be returning for our second Alumni Retreat - a time to help give back and prepare for the 20 new Survivors coming in June and July for Season 6 Survivors of Heroes retreats.  "I had such a great time on my retreat, I want to help give others that chance, to pay it forward."
