Dear Friend,

When New Jersey changed its school funding formula to help underfunded schools, struggling districts like Red Bank and Freehold Borough finally got the resources they needed to excel. But as Freehold Borough moved from cardboard-divided classrooms to real school facilities, the neighboring Freehold Regional school district has found itself losing funds due to a decline in enrollment.

Education shouldn't be a zero-sum game. When districts like Freehold Borough and Red Bank succeed, districts like Freehold Regional, Ocean Township, Eatontown, and Tinton Falls shouldn't have to face the prospect of cutting vital programs or staff. That's why it's time for us to recommit to New Jersey's public schools and make the right investments for our children.

That means:
  1. Fully funding the final $200 million in Extraordinary Special Education Aid, ending a system that penalizes schools for investing in special education and giving every student with special needs the resources they need to succeed;
  2. Funding an additional $200 million in one-time transitional education aid to ease the transition to new demographic and fiscal realities while preserving important educational programs by holding districts harmless to prior year aid levels for one year, letting us continue toward a more equitable distribution of state aid that balances the needs of all New Jersey students;
  3. Funding these programs through an increase in the state corporate tax rate, forcing big corporations to put the windfalls they received from the federal "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act" toward our students' education, rather than stock buybacks and exotic investments;
  4. Strengthening regional school districts, ensuring that our school funding system works to the advantage of efficiently consolidated districts like Freehold Regional - rather than against them; and
  5. Reviewing and updating the school funding formula, modernizing our state's education system to account for present-day costs of special education, transportation, free and reduced lunch, and other expenses.
New Jersey has the best schools in the nation - but if we don't double down on the investments we've made into education, we could see the quality of our schools begin to slip. For our children, for our families, and for the future of our state, it's vital that we help our public schools to be the best they possibly can.

If you agree, add your name to the #SupportOurSchools petition - and let Governor Murphy, Senate President Sweeney, and Speaker Coughlin know that it's time to invest in our schools.

Add your name today, and help us make a real difference for New Jersey's students.
Sincerely,
