Happy Tuesday! We trust this newsletter finds you all doing well, and that your week is off to a wonderful start. Here are a few events happening in the next few weeks. We hope to see you in some of these event, if not all of them! 

This Week:

University Health Services Q&A
EGSA will be holding a Q&A with Connie Morrow, assistant director of University Health Services, on Friday, December 6th from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in Decio 235. Drop by to have your questions answered about changes to this year's university-provided health care plans.
Town Hall and Board Meeting
Let your voice be heard! Join us for our next board meeting on Friday, December 6th at 1:00pm. The first 15 minutes will serve as a town hall meeting, where every member of our department can come and talk to us, discuss any concerns they might have, and/or ask questions to the board. We hope to see you there! 
Email Guidelines
You should all have received an email from Alissa inviting you to join the new EGSA grad student communication platform. Here are some guidelines to ensure the proper use of this forum:
  • This will be an informal, but professional forum for internal communication amongst the EGSA graduate students, including PhDs, MFAs, and MAs.  It will allow students to communicate with each other regarding social events or questions like tracking down library books without going through the moderated department listserv.  
  • The EGSA board will be overseeing conversations to make sure the forum remains professional. If we notice the forum being used unprofessionally or unethically, we reserve the right to ban access to individuals. If any student is unsure about whether their post is appropriate for the listserv, we encourage you to reach out to us. 
  • All official EGSA events will still be posted to the department listserv run by Alissa Doroh, since this new listserv is an opt-in option and not required of students to participate. As such, all students will receive an option to subscribe before the platform is open to be used. 
  • The department office will still have the ability to view conversations since they are responsible for overseeing the student organization on behalf of SAO. 
Next Week:

Holiday Cookie Swap
Need a little extra glucose and some holiday cheer to get those final seminar papers written? Come by the English Department, Decio 235, on December 13th any time between 10:00am and 4:00pm for some holiday music and a cookie swap / dessert potluck. We might even have some holiday films marathon for those who want to stay around and take a break with a cheesy movie!

Of course, a cookie swap is useless without cookies! So if you'd be willing to sign up to bring a plate of your favorite holiday cookies, your go-to-cookies, or just your "I bought this at Martin's" cookies, please put your name on the following google doc list:

Workshop: Teaching Literature
In the spring, EGSA will sponsor a series of workshops on teaching literature, to take place on selected Fridays between 12:30 and 2:00. Be on the lookout for a complete schedule, coming soon!
We are pleased to announce that we are officially opening the CFP for EGSA’s 2020 Graduate Student Symposium, which will take place on February, Thursday 27th and Friday 28th of 2020

  • Keynote Address 
  • Creative Writing panel 
  • Propose your own panel!
  • Abstract Workshop (in preparation for the symposium)
The Symposium is a fantastic opportunity to receive feedback from peers and faculty in the English Department as you prepare your work for other conferences or journal submissions. It is also a wonderful chance to learn what those outside your main area of research are working on.
We are excited to announce that, this year, we are changing the dynamic of the Symposium to make it bigger and better! We will be having a wonderful keynote address by Chanté Mouton Kinyon. We will also have at least one panel focused solely on Creative Writing, so we hope to see multiple submissions from our MFAs in creative writing! 

In addition, our CFP will look a little different as this year we are allowing panel proposals. If there’s a topic you particularly want to see being discussed in this year’s Symposium, and you have identified students who share your same research interest across periods/areas of studies, we encourage you to organize and propose a themed panel along with your peers. This is a great opportunity for interdisciplinary collaborations! We will be selecting two student-created themed panels, one for each day of the Symposium. In your proposal, you must list at least 3 participants (including who will be chairing, if the chair is also presenting a paper) and the information regarding their respective papers (title and abstract for each one).

Lastly, in an effort to make the abstract submission process as stress-free as possible, this year our wonderful EGSA Board Officers have agreed to participate in abstract workshops where we will be offering help in brainstorming and drafting abstracts. We will have our first workshop in December (more information to be sent in a following newsletter). You can also reach out directly to the board through email. 

IMPORTANT: The CFP portals will be open until Sunday, January 26th at 11:59pm. We will not be accepting abstracts after this date, to allow for a better and smoother organization of our Symposium.
