Over the past few weeks, we have mourned alongside communities across the nation following the devastating events that recently took place in Minneapolis and elsewhere. Black lives matter, and it is long-overdue that we abolish systemic racial injustice and inequality in our country.

After many days of self-reflection, listening to important voices, and having discussions on representation within our team, we decided we wanted to use our platform and share resources to create change in the industry we know best: financial services, a field in which people of color make up less than 4%.

Below, we have shared links to three articles and thought leadership pieces that we have found particularly helpful, eye-opening, and compelling during this time. It’s just a start, but we hope that reading these pieces and seeing these perspectives will spark important, honest conversations within your own firms.
Three Resources to Start the Conversation

Financial Advisors: Take Action to Create More Diverse and Inclusive Teams
At this current moment, so many of us are asking ourselves, “What can I do? How can I help?” The CFP Board has made it easy by outlining some tangible steps you can take to make your advisory team more diverse and inclusive. In our latest Beyond AUM blog post, we’ve outlined some of their recommendations and also linked to their research report, “Racial Diversity Among Financial Planners,” for more information.

Navigating the Financial Planning World as a Person of Color
What can you do on a daily basis to challenge inequality and give people of color opportunities to grow and thrive in your firm? This article, written by author and financial wellness coach Eugenié George, explores how advisors can become effective allies to and champions for people of color in the financial services industry.

I am a black woman advisor. Am I valued by this industry?
The real work starts with actively listening to, lifting up, and learning from the experiences of people of color to catalyze positive change. We encourage you to read this powerful column written by Zaneilia Harris, CFP®, president of Harris & Harris Wealth Management Group. She sheds an important light on what she has experienced as a Black female leader in the financial services industry.
The time to take action is now. We all need to commit to making a change to create a more inclusive industry — one that is actually representative of our society and of the clients we serve.
