As the summer unfolds and the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) draws to a close, millions of Canadians will begin to panic as money disappears and much-needed jobs do not materialize. The reopening of stores while welcome also brings trepidation about the second wave of COVID-19. Vying for our attention has been the emergence of a historic conversation on racism in Canada. From questioning how we fund policing to an unprecedented acknowledgement of systemic racism from leaders, many Canadians are discovering an unpleasant truth that lies behind our facade of politeness. Not surprising, in the wake of all this change and challenge almost half of Canadians are reporting higher levels of anxiety.

It’s time for a deep breath and a measured assessment.

Before you can begin to manage tumultuous emotions and focus on the future, you have to let go of a few things. Let go of the idea of being in control; it’s a myth that frustrates and drives us towards unhappiness. Let go of the pressure you are placing on yourself to act or not act; it’s a distraction. When the time is right your instincts will tell you what to do. The question isn’t should or shouldn’t I; it’s why or why not? Reframe negative ideas into opportunities. If the last several months have taught me anything, it’s that there is always room to grow in an unpredictable world and even in the middle of chaos there is beauty.

If ever there has been a time to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset, it’s now. Lean into entrepreneurial competencies like self-awareness and working with others. Think about perseverance and what motivates you. Don’t lose sight of your creativity and perhaps most of all keep learning.

The implications of this extended lifespan are numerous and transcend every aspect of life. Ageing well is what most people aspire to but there is no one magical prescription that will work for everybody. What has been proven, however, is that keeping one’s brain working with new learning will contribute to keeping those synapses firing and re-wiring.

Book: A Long Bright Future: An Action Plan for a Lifetime of Happiness, Health, and Financial Security
Laura L. Carstensen Ph.D. (Author)

From one of the world's leading authorities on longevity and ageing comes the first book to address a uniquely twenty-first-century question: What are we going to do with those twenty or thirty years we didn’t expect?

Due to unfounded fears of unhappiness and regret, many intelligent, otherwise rational people, even into their forties and fifties, are so convinced that old age is a time of misery that they simply deny any other outcome and refuse to plan their own destiny. In A Long Bright Future, Laura L. Carstensen seeks to shed the myths and misconceptions about ageing that stop individuals from adequately preparing for healthy, fulfilling, and financially stable long lives.

We’re living in a time when five generations of a family may all be alive at the same time. Everything will change education, work, financial markets. And we—as individuals and as a nation—need to be prepared. In a reassuring and respectful tone, this optimistic and highly informative guide to smart ageing will show readers the steps they need to take to ensure that long life becomes synonymous with a good life.
