AGEISM HAS COME OF AGE!

By Helen Hirsh Spence

Ageism, unlike other discriminatory practices that have already been identified as toxic, is finally coming of age! The World Health Organization, the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the United Nations Population Fund released an evidence-based research report on the impacts of ageism on March 18.  As a consequence, a long awaited, global anti-ageism campaign was launched calling for a world for all ages (#AWorld4AllAges).

"WE NEED TO TALK" EVENT #4
DATE:  WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 2021
TIME:  12:00 to 1:00 pm (ET)

TOPIC:  AGEISM

The UN released its Global Report on Ageism on March 18, 2021. For the first time, ageism is being addressed world-wide with evidence-based research and recommendations. It may be surprising for some to discover that one out of every two persons is actually ageist against older adults. But ageism cuts both ways. It affects young and old and impacts us individually, societally and economically.

Who benefits from an age-siloed world? No one.

Join us to unpack some of these findings and discuss why ageism continues to be the only "ism" that continues to be socially acceptable. How can we change this? Let's figure it out together.

Hosted by Helen Hirsh Spence, founder and CEO of Top Sixty Over Sixty, these empowering, monthly Zoom-based sessions tap into the thinking, knowledge, attitudes, and perspectives of everyone present.

From One Global Movement to Another
By Virginia (Ginny) Merritt

Image:  Sorry for the inconvenience, Image.ie

I began to ponder the similarities between the Feminist and Women’s Liberation movement of the 1960s and the increasing spread of today’s anti-ageism movement across the globe. What struck me most is that some of the same women who were active in the earlier women’s movement are again stepping up, this time advocating for age diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This time the group included 25% of participants under the age of 40, 5% over the age of 75 and the majority falling between the ages of 56-74.

During the pandemic in January, the animals in Germany’s Cologne Zoo were acting depressed and never left their dens. No one was able to visit any more; the zoo remained empty. Dee, Anita and Paul know that whether eighteen or eighty, we all need meaningful relationships, a sense of purpose, and the chance to express ourselves. They reveal that the second half of life can actually be a time of rediscovery and renewal, of giving back, and growing into more authentic versions of ourselves.
