Groundbreaking Moment!

The Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation celebrated the Michael Towbes Library Plaza groundbreaking on May 4th. We welcomed our generous donors and supporters to the site where the Michael Towbes Plaza will be built and heard a few words from our Foundation President Anne Howard, Campaign Co-Chairs Jim Jackson and Janet Grufis, Library Director Jessica Candiente, Council Member Eric Friedman, Anne Towbes, Barbara Hauter Woodward, and Foundation Director Lauren Trujillo. Thank you to all who were able to attend and celebrate this momentous day!
YOU Open Doors to ... Lifelong Learning
Together, We Open Doors for learners of all ages, and the Library Plaza will be an inviting space to connect with more of our community.

We are committed to educating the community about all the Library has to offer for all ages and walks of life. The Lifelong Learning for Library Plaza fund is how we will uphold our commitment and inspire continued growth. With the community’s help we can build sustainable support for new and existing programs the Library Plaza will foster.

We are thrilled to announce The John C. Mithun Family Foundation has pledged a $125,000 matching gift to the Public Library to help launch a $2 million Lifelong Learning for Library Plaza fund to sustain the Plaza and programming for all.

Today, YOU can continue to grow the possibilities for our Library. By making a contribution toward this matching gift you will double your gift to expand education and literacy programs and revitalize the heart of our downtown.

Lifelong learning happens at the Santa Barbara Public Library!
DONATE NOW
Thank You Michael Towbes Library Plaza Donors!

We have reached our $5 million goal to fund the Michael Towbes Library Plaza! The Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation would like to thank everyone who contributed and made this project possible.

The completion of this project captures the essence of community building at the Library — people come together for inspiration, education, fun, and engagement, and leave feeling a stronger sense of community. To put it in the words of Campaign co-chair Mr. Jim Jackson, the Library Plaza is an opportunity to show everyone that the Public Library goes beyond just providing books.

Once the Plaza is built, it will not only forever solidify the legacy of Michael Towbes, but will also demonstrate the Library's ability to grow and evolve to meet the community's needs while promoting learning and civic participation for years to come.

Michael Towbes Library Plaza
Onward and Upward!
Pictured above is local Santa Barbara philanthropist Anne Towbes — wife of the late Michael Towbes. Mrs. Towbes spoke to thank everyone for honoring her late husband who would have been proud to see the project come to fruition as he was someone who was both a "life-long learner" and an avid supporter of the arts and nonprofits in Santa Barbara. Most notably, she remarked:

"Michael had a favorite saying that we all loved to hear him say, 'the only thing better than a Ground-breaking is a Ribbon Cutting.'  He also often said, 'Onward and Upward.'  So let’s follow his lead and look forward to celebrating the completion of the Michael Towbes Library Plaza very soon."
Pictured above is Barbara Hauter Woodward saying a few words during the Groundbreaking program. As part of the Plaza renovations, the space where the oak trees are planted within the site will be named "The Woodward Grove" in dedication to her late husband J. Taylor Woodward III.

On behalf of the Foundation, we asked her what she was most looking forward to once the Plaza and Woodward Grove were built:

“What I am most looking forward to once the Plaza and the Woodward Grove are built is sharing the space with my husband's family for many years to come.” - Barbara Hauter Woodward

LEAVE A LEGACY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS OF LEARNERS
