Happy Holidays
December is a month for remembering loved ones. I hope you can find some time throughout the holiday season to reach out to or rekindle relationships with family and friends. We are all so busy just getting by that we frequently neglect to look about and see how we might be able to enhance our own lives while also improving someone else's. The holidays are a wonderful time to introduce our kids to the joy of charitable giving. A good lifetime results from having a generous spirit. Below are just a few ways to encourage a generous spirit while also practicing academic and social skills:
- Write holidays cards for those in nursing homes
- Bake cookies for neighbors
- Create goodie bags for homeless people with a kind note
- Interview an elderly person about their favorite holiday memories from childhood
- Volunteer at a local shelter
- Create a family memory book as a gift
My warmest wishes for a peaceful and happy holiday break! May health, joy and prosperity be with your families in 2023.

Virtual Day Q&A: Take a look at this info related to tomorrow, our first virtual day of the school year.
- Why has my child been sent home with work? I thought snow days are a day off school.
DESE is allowing schools to submit a plan where some snow days may be covered with remote learning. At Crossroads, we have decided that, in order to be equitable, all students will have a paper-based work option.
- Does my child have to complete the whole packet in one day?
No! The work provided is meant to cover multiple snow days. Your student is expected to complete one activity per snow day. For instance, if we have one snow day, your child needs to complete just one activity/lesson from the printed work from the packet. For elementary students, one activity per choice board should be selected.
- Will attendance be counted since this is a day of school?
Yes! We will count students who have completed an activity from their snow day packet as "present" for the day. Please make sure your student completes at least one activity per snow day AND brings the work back to show their teacher.
Michael's Mission - Hygiene Drive: We will begin collecting personal hygiene products and monetary donations from all 3 campuses Dec. 19th through Jan. 27th. Collection bins will be placed at each school by Mon., Dec. 19th and Cash App donations can be sent to $KristinPfeiffer or Venmo to @Kristin-Pfeiffer with the note "Michael's Mission". Please click here for the list of items needed and here for more information on Michael's Mission.
Drills: We want to make sure our families are aware that we regularly schedule the following drills at all buildings in order to practice and be prepared. These drills take place throughout the year. If you have any questions regarding any of the drills, please contact your principal.
- Fire, tornado, intruder, earthquake

Summer Camp Opportunity from Camp Encourage: Camp Encourage provides quality social opportunities and overnight camp experiences for youth on the autism spectrum in the greater KC area. With meticulous planning and an accepting atmosphere, the nonprofit focuses on increasing personal self-esteem, personal self-understanding, skills of independence, social connections, and skills of recreation. Additionally, a small number of peer models are needed each session of camp. Any individual ages 8-18, not on the autism spectrum, may apply. Because Camp Encourage targets social and behavioral deficits often paired with autism spectrum disorder, peers selected need to demonstrate developmentally appropriate social and behavioral skills. Here is a video featuring campers last summer with whom CS Counselor, Tiffany Graham, worked closely. Email info@campencourage.org for more info.

General Illness Guidelines
Parents/guardians should keep students home from school if they have a temperature or other symptoms of illness. An ill student will be sent home, and may not return to school, until the student:
-
Has been fever-free for 24 hours without needing to use fever-reducing medications, such as ibuprofen or Tylenol. A fever is defined as an oral temperature above 100.3 degrees.
-
Has been free of vomiting and/or diarrhea for a full 24 hours, or has a doctor’s note indicating the student may return to school prior to the 24 hour time period.
-
Is free of frequent coughing without requiring the use of cough-suppressing medications, such as cough syrup.
-
Is free of lice (live bugs.)
-
Is free of other symptoms of illness that require exclusion from school as directed by the Missouri Department of Health and Human Services.
Students who are present at school with one or more of the above symptoms will be required to be picked up from school by a parent or guardian. Students should be picked up as soon as possible, and no more than 90 minutes after the school contacts the parent/guardian/emergency contact. This helps prevent the spread of any infectious diseases to other students and staff. If the school finds that a student is repeatedly not being picked up within 90 minutes, a meeting will be scheduled between the guardians, School Nurse, and administration.
COVID-19 and Other Specific Diseases
Please note that the above requirements are our guidelines for illnesses in general. It may be that if your child receives a specific diagnosis, such as Strep, COVID-19, Flu, etc., they will have to remain out of school for a longer period of time. If your child is diagnosed with a specific contagious illness, please alert your school nurse so they can provide guidance on when your child may be able to return to school.
