Farmers across the midwest this week are concerned with yellow corn, especially on organic acres. Unfavorable spring weather which delayed planting and soil compaction are influencing the root depth and the uptake of nutrients. 48% of corn producers say their corn crop is below average. Last week's warm weather certainly helped, however, we are still close to 100 heat units behind. Many farmers are utilizing Y-drop applicators, fertigation, and aerial applications to help bounce these nutrient deficiencies. While these are all useful tools to react, don't forget to address soil compaction this fall. GSR Dormant calcium can be a powerful tool in the fall to help alleviate soil compaction due to wet soils.
The wildlife is certainly enjoying some extra room to spread their wings this year at Soil Works owner Glen Rabenberg's "R" Organic Farm.
