Hello 2020!

Happy new (fiscal) year! Whether your budget officially re-starts this month or not, the new calendar year offers us an opportunity to refresh how we approach our work and determine what support we really need to fulfill our missions. If you haven't already developed your 2020 strategy and workplan, it's time to get started!

Having a formal document that lays out the whys and hows of your next year is crucial for establishing benchmarks and holding your staff accountable, as well as communicating with donors. When I am working on an annual strategy, I try to answer a few guiding questions (based on the Emergent Learning framework):

  • What do we want to accomplish?
  • How will we know when we have accomplished it?
  • What challenges might we face?
  • What have we learned from similar situations?
  • What will make us successful this time?

Planning is only useful if you follow through with your plans, so don't forget to schedule check-ins regularly as well. I like to meet at least monthly as a department and weekly with anyone I supervise, although we may adjust depending on the state of the project.

Looking to boost your skills to take your next career step in 2020? Here are some ideas of where to start.

Project and client updates

The end of the year was surprisingly busy for us! The NAGPRA grants due date changed for 2020, so we helped Bernstein & Associates prepare to focus on that at the beginning of the year. We started (ghost)writing a job search advice column for entry-level job seekers. Another client needed some last-minute polishing on a grant proposal that focused on revolutionizing how we think of civil engineering. And a number of folks got a head-start on their resolutions and contacted us to revise their resumes and other job search documents. We're also continuing to work on some "toolkits" and online courses to get you the support you need (at a more affordable price-point). Do you need some help with an upcoming project? Get in touch!
