2020: Progress Against the Odds

As Global Village School gets closer to being realised as an institution, its potential for systemic change becomes more and more palpable. Through the relationships we are building with like-minded organisations and philanthropy, our contributions to the discussion on education reform, and our efforts to assist remote learners and their carers, our vision to become a school feels closer than ever. Having recently secured $30,000 to run a second program for our future cohort of students, the goal is in sight!
 

Ask a Teacher: Global Village's Remote Learning Initiative
In response to the challenges that are being presented by remote learning, Global Village School teachers are responding to parent questions and releasing videos that directly address them. You can find handy tips and situational strategies on our dedicated web page. If there is something you would like advice on, but we don't have a video about it yet, feel free to submit a question on the web page. We may just be able to help.

Article: School: The New Mental Health Frontline

According to the Age (2020) Teachers are “overwhelmed” by students’ mental health issues – understandable given that 26% of students experience mental health issues, many reporting that school pressure is one of the main contributors (ABC, 2020). Are schools ready for this enormous
responsibility? Has this always been the case but we are only realising it more acutely now? What can we realistically expect of our schools and of teachers? How can we support young people to navigate the challenges that this era presents and prevent devastating consequences?

A Forum for GVS: Seeking Partners in Addressing Inequity

The time is ripe for innovation in the social sector. Charities and not-for-profits need to band together more than ever to ensure they can continue to support our most vulnerable communities and tackle our most pressing social issues. The insecurity of leased spaces can be a challenge, as well as the accessibility for our beneficiaries. Co-location and integrated service provision can be a powerful way address some of these obstacles. GVS Patron Jan Owen AM hosts a forum for vision-aligned orgs to discuss the possibilities of co-location.
