PCSO Bylaws Changes and Proposed 2019-2020 Officer Slate 
PCSO Bylaws Changes
The PCSO Board of Directors proposed the following bylaws changes and officer slate at the Ad Interim meeting in March, which will be voted on in October in Hawaii:

According to the PCSO bylaws, article XVI – amendments, proposed amendments shall be approved by the board of directors and then presented to the membership at least 30 days prior to the next Annual Session, where it may be adopted by a two-thirds vote of the active members present and voting at the regularly scheduled business meeting.

These edits will be voted on at the second business meeting of the Annual Session in Honolulu, HI, on Saturday, October 5, 2019. Any questions or concerns with the bylaws should be emailed to PCSO Executive Director, Callie Castro, at
Proposed 2019-2020 Officer Slate
The PCSO Board of Directors puts forward the following as the slate for 2019-2020 officers: Dr. Robert Meister (CA) – President, Dr. Marie Lathrop (OR) – President-Elect, and Dr. Thomas Merrill (WA) – Secretary-Treasurer. According to PCSO bylaws, article VI – officers, the president-elect, and secretary-treasurer will be elected at the Annual Session by the active members present and voting at the regularly scheduled business meeting. This election will take place at the second business meeting of the Annual Session in Honolulu, on Saturday, October 5, 2019.
AAO Foundation Eugene and Pauline Blair AAOF Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Laura Iwasaki, associate professor and Chair of the Department of Orthodontics at Oregon Health & Science University, received the 2019 AAO Foundation Eugene and Pauline Blair AAOF Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Park worked as an NBDE Part II Ortho-Pediatric Dentistry/ADAT Test Construction Committee Member
Jae Hyun Park, DMD, MSD, MS, PhD, chair of the postgraduate orthodontic program at A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) worked as a  National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Part II Ortho-Pediatric Dentistry/Advanced Dental Admission Test Construction Committee member from Aug. 13-16, 2019.

This year during the meeting, Dr. Linda Himmelberger, ADA Board of Trustee and Liaison to the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE), participated as a special guest.  

In 2009, the JCNDE created a new Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) designed to integrate the basic, behavioral, and clinical sciences to assess entry level competency in dentistry. It is intended to assist state boards of dentistry in evaluating candidates for dental licensure, and will eventually replace the current NBDE Parts I and II. The INBDE is scheduled to begin in 2020.

Although we are all given the same 24 hours in each day, how well you choose to spend that time can make a huge difference in accomplishing tasks, making more of an impact on the practice and your team, and allowing more free time for training, improved communications with patients and parents, team building, and personal empowerment.

Angle Pearls: Customizing Microimplant-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expander (MARPE) to Maximize Efficacy of Treatment

Incorporating adjunct mechanics into a patient’s microimplant-assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE) design gives the practitioner the ability to address problems in all three planes of space at the beginning of treatment. It can also decrease chair time and eliminate the need for additional appliances. By capitalizing on the biomechanical advantage of skeletal anchorage provided by the MARPE along with the favorable biological conditions following expansion, treatment efficiency can be maximized with these customized appliances.

Oregon Now Requires Completion of Accredited Post-doctoral Residency to Advertise as a Specialist
In March 2019, the SB 835 bill was introduced by an Oregon State Senator that a licensed dentist may only advertise as a specialist if they meet the following: 
  1. Has completed a post-doctoral residence program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, or its successor organization, and approved by the board by rule;
  2. Is a specialist as defined by the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards, or its successor organization, and adopted by board rule; or
  3. Has completed an advanced dental education program recognized by the United States Department of Education and approved by the board by rule.
