On May 11, 2020, a team of AAO representatives met by phone with staff for two members of the U.S. House of Representatives, in two separate meetings, to advocate for AAO members with respect to the availability of PPE as well as issues regarding federal agency regulations concerning the COVID-19 pandemic.

Initiative Underway to Equip Members with PPE Resources
The AAO has been working to identify viable resources for members needing to order PPE while preparing for reopening of o!ces during coming days, weeks and months. We are communicating with our industry suppliers in order to identify those best-positioned and willing to fulfill large orders from AAO members for PPE, especially masks, face shields, gowns and gloves, in a cost-e!cient and time-e!cient manner.

Information from suppliers that have responded to our query including pricing, where provided, can be found here

AAO Guide to Patient Communication for Reopening

Many orthodontists and their teams excel at preparing personalized, practice-specific messaging for patients and parents, and may wish to do so in reopening communications. In this instance, however, it may be helpful to view examples and points to cover to ensure that all important information is communicated.

Mary Beth Kirkpatrick has developed two sample messages about reopening which she provided to share with AAO members. Ms. Kirkpatrick, who is managing partner of Impact360 Consulting and founder and president of Gaidge, a cloud-based business analytics dashboard for orthodontists, divided her sample patient correspondence into two parts:

– Reopening Soon: A message conveying that a practice is preparing to reopen;
– Welcome Back: A message announcing a practice’s reopening.

Updated OSHA Guidelines for Dentistry Workers and Employers
On March 16, 2020, the American Dental Association called for dentists to keep their offices closed to all but urgent and emergency procedures during the COVID-19 outbreak. Unless emergency dental procedures absolutely cannot be delayed, OSHA further recommends that emergency dental procedures be performed on patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 only if appropriate precautions, including personal protective equipment (PPE), are available and used.
