Ortho Idol (New in 2021)

CALLING ALL ORTHODONTISTS AND TEAM MEMBERS! We will feature up-and-coming speakers during the 2021 Western Orthodontic Conference (WOCon) with a 30-minute lecture slot to talk about something amazing. This is a unique opportunity for people in orthodontics to present their clinical tips and tricks, scientific research, practice management, and business administration ideas to the entire PCSO & RMSO. The only over-arching criteria for the topic is that it has to be of interest to orthodontists. Our goal is to discover new speakers and ideas. Speakers chosen will receive complimentary registration for the WOCon meeting in Portland, October 2021.

Feel free to share this information with other orthodontists, specialists, team members, and speakers that may be outside of the PCSO/RMSO region but have something great to share.

Mr. Bill Capodagli, PCSO Bulletin Contributor
It is no secret that creating a patient-centric culture is beneficial to any health care organization. There are five elements that comprise The Disney Way's patient-centric culture model: (1) the "dream"/vision/story; (2) the values or beliefs; (3) the casting, including hiring, orientation, feedback, and development; (4) the reviews, or how to measure patient satisfaction; and lastly, (5) producing your unique show, including the story, the setting, the roles, and the backstage processes.

Paycheck Protection Program Reopened Monday, January 11th

The United States Small Business Administration (SBA) recently announced that the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) will reopen on Monday, January 11th for new and some existing borrowers. Community financial institutions will be able to draw on PPP loans at that time, and funds will be available to all participating lenders soon thereafter. In November and December, the AAO initiated a Call to Action via Voter Voice in which AAO members sent over 1,500 messages to members of Congress to advocate for additional PPP funding and other COVID-19 relief.

This new round of PPP funds will prioritize small businesses, offering $284 billion for job retention and other qualified expenses through March 31, 2021. Borrowers are eligible for this second round of funding under the following circumstances:

  • First round of PPP loan has been used for authorized expenses
  • Businesses with fewer than 300 employees
  • Businesses with a 25% reduction in gross receipts (between comparable quarters in 2019 and 2020

Learn more on PPP deadlines, eligibility requirements and applications.

Additionally, updates to the PPP loan program include:

  • Loans will cover additional expenses such as operations expenditures, property damage, supplier expenditures, and worker protection costs.
  • Loans now include greater flexibility for seasonal employees.
  • Borrowers may set their loan's covered period between 8 and 24 weeks to better suit individual needs.
  • Some borrowers can request to modify their first PPP loan amount.

This second round of loans is eligible for forgiveness via the same terms and conditions as earlier PPP loans. Applicants in this round of funding must file Form 2483-SD or the lender's equivalent form. The AAO advocacy team has been working to address issues of interest to AAO members and will continue to advocate on COVID-19 relief and other federal matters with the assistance of our partners at Cozen O'Connor. The AAO has advocated in numerous meetings with members of Congress for the continuation and expansion of PPP loans.

Can orthodontists administer the COVID-19 vaccine?

Multiple states are allowing dentists to administer the COVID-19 vaccine, and the number is expected to grow in the coming days. You can learn more about the process for administering the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines at the links below. The AAO will share more information with members on the vaccination process as it becomes available.

A Message from Dr. Chris Roberts: Inclusion and Engagement Task Force

Last June, I spoke about the civil unrest impacting our country and how the AAO was taking a hard look in the mirror at ourselves and at the profession of orthodontics. We believe that diversity is a strength and ensuring the involvement of our diverse membership will not make the AAO stronger. As part of our strategic efforts to increase inclusivity, I am pleased to announce our new Inclusion and Engagement Task Force (IETF).

This Inclusion and Engagement Task Force will have the following charges:
  1. Work to support and inspire diverse groups within the AAO by helping to develop tools and pathways to leadership.
  2. Identify obstacles for involvement in the AAO and make recommendations for change.
  3. Identify the unique needs and issues that face diverse orthodontists and implement plans to address these needs.
The Task Force will be composed of 8 diverse AAO members, a staff liaison and a trustee liaison.
  • Experience in leadership, whether it has been within the AAO or outside the AAO is preferred but not required.
  • The Chair of the Task Force will serve for a one-year term in the inaugural year, and thereafter, will be elected by the Task Force.
  • Each member will serve a two-year term with an option for renewal for up to three terms. The Task Force will meet via conference calls and communicate by electronic means.

Call to Action: We encourage you to take an active role in our association by completing the application on our member site by February 1st or nominating a person of diversity whom you think would bring insight, ideas and leadership to this Task Force.

Key Dates:
  • 2/1/2021: Application deadline
  • 2/22/2021: Task Force members are announced
  • 3/2021: Task Force kickoff meeting
Join the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network

In preparation for upcoming studies, the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network is asking existing AAO participants to update their profiles and invites new participants to register.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Network's goals are to conduct national oral health studies on topics of importance to you and your patients, provide outcomes that will improve patient care, and impact the way dentistry is practiced.

Dr. Veerasathpurush "Sath" Allareddy, an AAO member, is the national director of the Network's Specialty Node and is also developing the Network's Cleft Lip and Palate Node.

"The Network is a consortium of participating practices and dental organizations, committed to advancing knowledge of dental practice and ways to improve it," says Dr. Allareddy. "Essentially, it is 'practical science' for the benefit of real-world everyday clinical practice."

The Network has over 7,000 dentists, dental specialists and hygienist members nationally. If you join, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Be compensated for your participation in studies;
  • Network and collaborate with colleagues across the nation and within your region;
  • Be involved with national studies designed for busy clinicians.
There is no cost to join the network.

To get started, simply fill out the Enrollment Questionnaire about your professional background, practice, and patient characteristics. You can enroll online by going to, clicking the "Become a Member link, and following the prompts.

Three levels of enrollment are available:
  • Informational: Recieve newsletters and correspondence only
  • Limited: Receive newsletters, correspondence and participates in surveys
  • Full: Receive all of the above plus participation in in-office clinical studies of interest to you
Following enrollment, you will be contacted by a regional coordinator about the next steps, depending on your level of interest.

The Network has recently been funded for a COVID-19 registry, along with a clinical study. Nearly 100 orthodontists, most of them AAO members, previously engaged in a study of anterior open bite, the first AAO-proposed study funded by the Network and led by Dr. Greg Huang, chair of the University of Washington Department of Orthodontics.
