February 2021 Issue

Ortho Idol (New in 2021)

CALLING ALL ORTHODONTISTS AND TEAM MEMBERS! We will feature up-and-coming speakers during the 2021 Western Orthodontic Conference (WOCon) with a 30-minute lecture slot to talk about something amazing. This is a unique opportunity for people in orthodontics to present their clinical tips and tricks, scientific research, practice management, and business administration ideas to the entire PCSO & RMSO. The only over-arching criteria for the topic is that it has to be of interest to orthodontists. Our goal is to discover new speakers and ideas. Speakers chosen will receive complimentary registration for the WOCon meeting in Portland, October 2021.

Feel free to share this information with other orthodontists, specialists, team members, and speakers that may be outside of the PCSO/RMSO region but have something great to share.

Practice Management Diary: Whose Responsibility Is It?
Dr. Jeffrey Nichelini, PCSO Bulletin Section Editor
A colleague and friend of mine discovered we have a fundamental disagreement in our philosophy about referrals and therefore in the language we use with our other colleagues. One perspective is that the individual responsible for performing a dental procedure is also the individual responsible for determining the appropriateness or necessity for that procedure.

Summary of Stimulus Bills Impacting Small Business

The COVID-19 pandemic brought many unforeseen challenges to 2020 and 2021. Congress reacted by passing several pieces of legislation in its attempt to soften the economic impact to small businesses across the country.

As both a business owner and orthodontist, it is difficult to keep all the laws straight. This article summarizes the programs available to orthodontic business owners during 2020 and early 2021.

Webinar: Taking Advantage of the Employee Retention Credit (ERC)

Cain Watters & Associates recently released a blog outlining the changes to the Employee Retention Credit (ERC). These changes make the credit retroactive to March 12, 2020 and allow borrowers under the Paycheck Protection Program to now be eligible.

For some practices, this could be a substantial tax credit of $20,000 or more. You qualify if operations were fully or partially suspended due to government order or if collections dropped by 50% or more in any quarter in 2020 vs. 2019.

In the new webinar, CPAs Dan Wicker, Tom Gates and Bradley Blasingame review:

  • Changes to the ERC for both 2020 and 2021
  • An example of a credit calculation due to government mandate closure
  • An example of a credit calculation due to 50% revenue loss
  • Steps dental professionals can take to prepare to claim the credit

Update on Idaho Advocacy

The AAO Advocacy Department recently announced that through the Component Legal Support Fund, the AAO has hired a local Idaho lobbying firm to represent the Idaho State Society of Orthodontists and its members.

Last week, the members of the Idaho Senate Commerce & Human Resources Committee held a meeting to review and discuss several bills, including SB 1012 relating to dentistry. Idaho State Board of Dentistry Executive Director Susan Miller presented the bill to the committee and explained that the impetus was the Governor’s veto of SB 1295 and his reasoning letter, which suggested that there were some protections that should be brought forward again. On February 5, the Senate voted to pass the bill onto the House.

SB 1012 ensures a dentist cannot limit a patient's right to file a complaint with the Board of Dentistry, mirroring similar language from SB 1295 (from last year, which passed the Legislature but was vetoed by the governor).

Specifically, the bill provides that the Board may refuse to issue or renew a dental license, or may revoke, suspend, place on probation, reprimand or take other disciplinary action with respect to a dental license if a dentist requires, "directly, or as a member, representative, contracted agent, or employee of or in connection with any company, association, corporation, or partnership, that a patient sign an agreement limiting his right or ability to file a complaint with the board."

Now that the bill has passed the Senate, we need your help to ensure the bill passes through the House of Representatives and is signed by Governor Little. Click here to send a message to your state House Representative.

Every orthodontist (as a citizen of and licensed dental provider in his or her state) and every patient has the right, independently and individually, to express his or her opinion on any dental issue to his or her state dental board. The AAO believes that Idaho SB 1012 helps further protect patient health and safety and ensures a patient's right to complain is not abridged.

Join the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network

In preparation for upcoming studies, the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network is asking existing AAO participants to update their profiles and invites new participants to register.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Network's goals are to conduct national oral health studies on topics of importance to you and your patients, provide outcomes that will improve patient care, and impact the way dentistry is practiced.

Dr. Veerasathpurush "Sath" Allareddy, an AAO member, is the national director of the Network's Specialty Node and is also developing the Network's Cleft Lip and Palate Node.

"The Network is a consortium of participating practices and dental organizations, committed to advancing knowledge of dental practice and ways to improve it," says Dr. Allareddy. "Essentially, it is 'practical science' for the benefit of real-world everyday clinical practice."

The Network has over 7,000 dentists, dental specialists and hygienist members nationally. If you join, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Be compensated for your participation in studies;
  • Network and collaborate with colleagues across the nation and within your region;
  • Be involved with national studies designed for busy clinicians.
There is no cost to join the network.

To get started, simply fill out the Enrollment Questionnaire about your professional background, practice, and patient characteristics. You can enroll online by going to, clicking the "Become a Member link, and following the prompts.

Three levels of enrollment are available:
  • Informational: Recieve newsletters and correspondence only
  • Limited: Receive newsletters, correspondence and participates in surveys
  • Full: Receive all of the above plus participation in in-office clinical studies of interest to you
Following enrollment, you will be contacted by a regional coordinator about the next steps, depending on your level of interest.

The Network has recently been funded for a COVID-19 registry, along with a clinical study. Nearly 100 orthodontists, most of them AAO members, previously engaged in a study of anterior open bite, the first AAO-proposed study funded by the Network and led by Dr. Greg Huang, chair of the University of Washington Department of Orthodontics.
AJO-DO Publishes New AAO Foundation Rapid Assessment of Evidence Study
In 2018, the AAO Foundation launched a new service: An opportunity to question a panel of orthodontic researchers questions about the validity of manufacturers’ product claims. Any AAO member may ask the AAOF Rapid Assessment of Evidence panel to review evidence related to orthodontic supplier product claims and assess the validity of the claims.

The second article produced by the RAE program, “American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Rapid Assessment of Evidence: Accelerated Teeth Movement,” has been published in the Articles in Press section of the AJO-DO website.
