March 2021 Issue

Ortho Idol (New in 2021)

CALLING ALL ORTHODONTISTS AND TEAM MEMBERS! We will feature up-and-coming speakers during the 2021 Western Orthodontic Conference (WOCon) with a 30-minute lecture slot to talk about something amazing. This is a unique opportunity for people in orthodontics to present their clinical tips and tricks, scientific research, practice management, and business administration ideas to the entire PCSO & RMSO. The only over-arching criteria for the topic is that it has to be of interest to orthodontists. Our goal is to discover new speakers and ideas. Speakers chosen will receive complimentary registration for the WOCon meeting in Portland, October 2021.

Feel free to share this information with other orthodontists, specialists, team members, and speakers that may be outside of the PCSO/RMSO region but have something great to share.

Washington State Advocacy
Dr. Michelle Fogg Neal, PCSO Bulletin Contributor
Over the past several years, the Washington State Society of Orthodontists (WSSO) has been extremely active at both the legislative and the regulatory body levels. As legislative chair, I have had the pleasure of working with several amazing members of the WSSO board to be responsive to regulatory issues that would negatively affect both the orthodontic practice and our patients.

Portrait of a Professional: Dr. Marie Lathrop
Dr. Jae Hyun Park, PCSO Bulletin Editor-in-Chief
Jae Park (JP): Tell me something about your childhood.

Marie Lathrop (ML): I was born and raised in Emmett, a small town in southwest Idaho, 30 miles northwest of Boise. My mother was a teacher, and my father had a car dealership and an outfitter and guide business. He really wanted me to be a rodeo queen, but I did better in school than in the arena.

Component Legal Support Fund (CLSF)

Since approved by the AAO House of Delegates in 2015, the Component Legal Support Fund (CLSF) has helped 38 states and provinces to engage in advocating on issues facing orthodontists with both dental boards and state legislatures.

How does the CLSF work?

First, the component president of a state or province works with the AAO Legal and Advocacy Department to fill out the CLSF Application, including estimating a time frame, finding, and interviewing a lobbyist if necessary, and deciding the amount of funding needed for the advocacy issue. Then, the application is signed by the component president and sent for approval from the AAO Board of Trustees.

Once approved, the AAO staff, with support from local professional advocacy firms, gets to work to advocate for you by contacting component leadership, constituent leadership, and the constituent trustee to describe the advocacy initiative and communicate the plan of action as described in the CLSF application. Staff then works with component leadership and interested members to create awareness about the issue, whether its through public comment opportunities at the dental board or by meeting with or writing to state representatives and senators.
