Ortho Idol (New in 2021) - DEADLINE 4/30

CALLING ALL ORTHODONTISTS AND TEAM MEMBERS! We will feature up-and-coming speakers during the 2021 Western Orthodontic Conference (WOCon) with a 30-minute lecture slot to talk about something amazing. This is a unique opportunity for people in orthodontics to present their clinical tips and tricks, scientific research, practice management, and business administration ideas to the entire PCSO & RMSO. The only over-arching criteria for the topic is that it has to be of interest to orthodontists. Our goal is to discover new speakers and ideas. Speakers chosen will receive complimentary registration for the WOCon meeting in Portland, October 2021.

Feel free to share this information with other orthodontists, specialists, team members, and speakers that may be outside of the PCSO/RMSO region but have something great to share.

The deadline for applications is 4/30.

Implementation of Teledentistry for Orthodontic Practices
Dr. Jae Hyun Park, PCSO Bulletin Editor-in-Chief
There has been a dramatic increase in the use of teledentistry since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic because patients need to be seen by a provider without exposing themselves or their provider to the virus. Remote teledentistry appointments enable providers to evaluate, monitor, and diagnose issues and keep their practice on track while ensuring that patients do not fall through the cracks. Following safe, HIPAA-com-pliant teledentistry guidelines enables dental providers to deliver care safely.

Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act Introduced in 117th Congress

On Tuesday, March 16, Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Representatives Anna Eshoo (D-CA) and Drew Ferguson (R-GA) reintroduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation to ensure health insurance coverage for needed treatment and procedures for individuals born with congenital anomalies or birth defects. The Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act (ELSA) closes a coverage gap to ensure that health plans cover medically necessary services related to a patient’s anomaly or birth defect, including any serious dental and oral-related procedures that are necessary to maintaining health and overall function.

The AAO has joined a broad coalition of national health care professionals and patient advocacy organizations to support this legislation. ELSA has been an AAO legislative priority for several years, and participants in the 2021 virtual Professional Advocacy Conference explained the importance of this legislation in meetings with bill leads Representatives Eshoo and Ferguson.

You can read the full press release here.

Ask your legislators to sign on as a co-sponsor to ELSA, or thank them for already co-sponsoring, by visiting AAO’s Voter Voice page.

Idaho Passes Legislation to Protect Patients' Rights

Supported unanimously in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, Senate Bill 1012 was signed into law by Idaho Governor Brad Little last month.

SB 1012 protects a patient’s right to !le a complaint with the Board of Dentistry. Speci!cally, the legislation provides that the Board may refuse to issue or renew a dental license, or may revoke, suspend, place on probation, reprimand or take other disciplinary action with respect to a dental license if a dentist requires:

“…directly, or as a member, representative, contracted agent, or employee of or in connection with any company, association, corporation, or partnership, that a patient sign an agreement limiting his right or ability to !le a complaint with the board.”

Through the Component Legal Support Fund, the AAO hired a local Idaho lobbying !rm to represent the Idaho State Society of Orthodontists and its members. The AAO House of Delegates created the Component Legal Support Fund (CLSF) in 2015 to fund advocacy initiatives in the states and provinces. Since then, 38 states and provinces have applied for and utilized the CLSF to engage in advocating on issues facing orthodontists with both dental boards and state legislatures. Learn more about CLSF here.

Every orthodontist (as a citizen of and licensed dental provider in his or her state) and every patient has the right, independently and individually, to express his or her opinion on any dental issue to his or her state dental board. The AAO believes that Idaho SB 1012 helps further protect patient health and safety and ensures a patient’s right to complain is not abridged. Thank you to all the Idaho orthodontists who contacted their legislators to educate them about this important legislation.

CAO President, Dr. Boyd Martin: Advances in Teledentistry Shouldn't Endanger Patient Health

A recent opinion piece in Capitol Weekly, a publication popular among California legislators, highlighted the benefits of telehealth, and specifically teledentistry, as a safer and more accessible means of providing care during the pandemic. The author applauded the California State Senate for "rejecting legislation that would have created more barriers to teeth straightening services by requiring unnecessary in-person visits."

The California Association of Orthodontists' (CAO) President, Dr. Boyd Martin, responded to the opinion piece, written by the executive director of TechNet, explaining that California orthodontists, "embrace new technologies as a way to improve service delivery and access to care, but we want to caution policymakers and consumers that its utilization should not come at the expense of patient health and safety." Dr. Matrin adds that access to care and measures to protect consumers "do not have to be mutually exclusive."
