Hello gorgeous friends, I hope you're doing alright. As the parasols come down and umbrellas go up it's suddenly feeling very Autumny here. But as someone who doesn't do well with the heat of summer, I'm not complaining. You can dress to keep dry, but not to keep cold. Anyway, I thought we'd sink our teeth into a meaty subject this week.

POST MEAT: Tuesday is World Vegetarian Day and the start of World Vegan Month. Don't worry, I ain't recruitin': eat what you like. But I'm wondering if these things are gaining poignancy. Whereas diet was once a lifestyle choice unique to all of us, more people than ever are adopting some form of plant-based diet for environmental reasons rather than ethics alone, and their hearts, and heads, are in the right place.

So is what we eat, and don't eat, a politicised act? In the UK, meat and dairy are already politicised. Skimming this list of foods you'll really need to stockpile for a no-deal Brexit, the supply of meat and milk right up there largely because meat is so inefficient to produce. Alongside the surge in flexitarianism, perhaps because of it, one in six new food products launched in the UK last year claimed to be free of animal ingredients.

The shift is cultural as much as dietary. Chef and restaurateur Jamie Oliver certainly isn't squeamish about meat (once slaughtering an unstunned lamb on his cookery show) but his latest show is solely about Meat-Free Meals. Oliver might even be late to the party: Jack Monroe's been batting out quality and cost-effective recipes for years. ๐ŸŒฑ

I can't really draw or write by hand, so mine looks like the scrawlings of a toddler. But the discipline has been highly beneficial.

Burger me senseless: Protein diversification is booming; though prime cuts aren't yet the battleground. Most of the time we eat convenience, or are addicted to it: so far the notable outbreak of meat-free innovations has been in casual dining.

Some of the biggest food brands, even those with a meat-based heritage, are looking beyond. McDonalds has its McVegan burger trialling in Finland and KFC is trialling vegan nuggets in the US. And of course the Greggs vegan sausage roll, part of a growth strategy to acquire new customers, has proved so successful that the chain is working on vegan versions of all its bestsellers. While not haute cuisine, these big side-steps into dietary flexibility grant diners the chance to vote with their orders.

The biggest launch of all came from Burger King, rolling out their meat-free Impossible Whopper across the US earlier this year. Impossible is one of two impressive meat-free burger options, and you can tell they might onto something simply by the backlash. A lobbying group called the Center for Consumer Freedom took out full-page press ads arguing Beyond Meat's veggie burger is unhealthy, even though it isn't.

Both Beyond and Impossible have found demand outstripping supply, leading to them both at times being hard to find. Bloomberg built a tracker to help Americans find where Impossible burgers are available: impressive in a country where eating low-grade meat is practically constitutional.

In the UK, just as the casual dining sector is taking an economic beating, a new celebrity-backed burger chain is emerging not only serving the Beyond Burger but where everything is meat-free. This is post-meat. ๐Ÿ”
Finally: It's a lovely morning in the village, and you are a horrible goose. That's the pitch for Untitled Goose Game, my new favourite game. The Guardian gave it five stars and called it a honking good time. Related: video games don't lead to violence, despite what politicians claim. So if that's the case, why am I compelled to terrorise a bucolic English village?! Honk! HONK! ๐ŸŽฎ
