NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has proposed new privacy rules for substance use disorder (SUD) records. This proposal would change the 42 C.F.R Part 2 regulations and have an impact on how information is shared between health care providers, researchers, and health technology companies. The Department of Health and Human Services states that these changes would "facilitate better coordination of care for substance use disorders which will also enhance care for opioid use disorder (OUD). These provisions will be an important part of the Federal response to the opioid epidemic, while maintaining part 2 confidentiality protections." The revision to Part 2 will not change prohibiting law enforcement from using patient records for criminal prosecution against the patient. See the Proposed Rule Fact Sheet for details of what could change and how it might impact you.

SAMHSA created the theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger,” to "emphasize the need to share resources and build networks across the country to support the many paths to recovery. This month is dedicated to supporting new treatments and recovery practices, and spotlighting the recovery community and all the people that give so much of their time and resources to help with this journey.
